You can charge A123s with any charger in NiMH mode as long as you watch the charge voltage and continually decrease the current to maintain 3.6v/cell. That is assuming your specific charger lets you adjust the current on the fly without having to start over...

AFAIK, the 989 doesn't allow you to change current.

Oh well, lipo batteries are doing well for me so far. None have puffed on me. ...knock on wood.

I'd REALLY like to get some of those A123s, but they simply are not shaped to fit in a nice, compact area. Now, when/if they make them like regular lipos...

Yes, if you can adjust the current on the fly, then crank the amps to start off, then once it hits 3.6v/cell, then just turn it to 1 amp... that seems like the easiest to me.

Brain, nice to hear you would like to try them... totally, they need to be prismatic cells for them to work with all setups. They also need different sized cells, like some 4Ah, 6Ah, or whatever makes the most sense for the most used capacities.

wish there were A123 that are smaller/lighter as 6S2P is huge and heavy (heavier than lipo) for use in my maxx

I have been racing electrics with nitro's for about 7 years, thats what happens when you are the only electric in 50 miles. I raced brushed with a 5 minute heat, we never had enough to pit so the small heats work for everyone. Most of the time i felt like Gen. Custer in a field of indians, I have had everything form derogatory remarks to people unplugging and catching the cords of the chargers to keep me from racing (I guess they didn't want the truth to come out). over time i got acceptance, but still kind of an outsider in the races. I am trying to help electric by running my brushless stuff as much as i can.

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

That is just a disgrace. I can't beleive people would go out of their way to do something like that or do it at all... everyone is just out there to enjoy themselves and have fun IMO.

They are ignorant, and brain washed... that's all there is to it.

EDIT: ...and arrogant too. :)

I think that if they were repackaged to be like lipos and remove the metal casing, they would be a lot lighter. Probably still a bit heavier than lipos, but not as bad...

I took it as a compliment, they talked down to me but that showed me they were worried about being beat by a flashlight. I agree ruining a charger was bad, but i knew by the actions i had them worried. So i was in some way content

No one is forcing them to run nitro. If they can't take the heat, they need to get out of the proverbial kitchen!

Yeah, it IS funny. Sounds like a bunch of babies whining that it isn't "fair". I suppose, like the current theme in this country, we have to make sure we don't hurt their poor feelings.
