FYI to everyone. i am kinda a phone guy and i have a little info for you. i read the newest blogs and post daily and keep up to date on my info...
the new, 3G iPhone will have actual GPS, none slippery black plastic case (kinda like the texture on the Moto Q ) and will have a 2mp camera. 16gb and 32gb size options with a $100 difference in price. if you switch to ATT and sign a new 2 year service agreement, you will get $100 off price of phone but you MUST sign a data plan to the iPhone. Yes, you can cancel it later but they do this so you see how "fun" the iPhone is with it.
in my eyes, when it will come with WiFi capabilities and there are so many "Hot Spots" around now, whats the use? i am at work all day on a PC and we have wireless here in the office. at home, i have wireless, most bars have wireless down here in my area. (South Florida) so whats the point in paying 30 bucks a month more for the data plan. just me, but who is going to be out with friends checking and sending emails back and forth. your not. your going to be drinking, driving, at the beach, whatever and you will not what to be rude and be on your phone constantly. or better yet, send the emails you want and when you get home, they are all sent. you get the point.
i may keep the data plan for a while and see how it is. but for the simple fact of having a 32gb iPod, iPhone, Internet at your fingertips, 2mp camera, Video, Movies, Music, unlimited games and most importantly a bad a$$ looking phone i am definatly sold.
got a quick story on topic.. kinda funny, kinda why i am on these forums...
4 months ago i was at a wedding in Idaho with my girl. 3am i am walking into a bar and trip over an iPhone near the front door. nobody was around so i picked it up. too drunk to see anything on the phone or how to use it, i decided to play with it in the morning and call the last few numbers and get it to its rightful owner. phone stayed on all night and when i woke up, phone was dead. i was leaving to fly back home that morning so i brought it home, took it to my buddy at ATT and told her to find out who it is by the serial number and get the phone to them. she looked up some info and foudn out they already (it had been 2 days now) paid 50 bucks for the insurance replacement. she said, why dont you just keep it as an iPod and be happy. since i am on Verizon, thats my only option i guess. i ended up, 3 weeks later, trading someone a 3906 eMaxx for the phone and never looked back. the phone had a scratch down the entire screen and was annoying me for movies and music videos. so no loss to me, only a gain on a nice RC.
i have spent around $500 on the eMaxx so far and dont have anything left to upgrade besides an extended chassis and minor parts. so i am totally happy....
sorry for the long story guys... i am bored here at work this morning. Cheers!

Man, am I the only one who thinks a phone should just be a phone? When are they gonna start doing the laundry and dishes? Personally, manufacturers try to cram so many features into these things that they don't excel at any one thing. Seperate devices are a PITA to carry around, but offer better performance (esp for the $$$).
When I got my phone about a year ago, I asked the guy at US Cellular (because everyone I know is on that carrier and get free cell to cell calls) for just a basic phone - no camera, no PDA, etc. I did however want something sturdy since I tend to be hard on phones (broke several work phones in 2 years). He just looked at me kinda funny and pulled out my current Motorola V323i. It's perfect! Just wish it had one measly game on it for when I'm bored waiting for movies to start or something...
My g/f has a Palm Treo 700p and it seems ok. She got it because her previous job was a real-estate agent and they had software specifically for that phone. Buttons are too tiny for my large fingers, doesn't have GPS, reboots itself every week or so, and web browsing is so-so. It has a full browser, but is missing Flash, Java, etc plugins. And it sometimes swaps between the mobile version of a site (if the site has it)) and the non-mobile version - like the server can't really decide what it is. However, I found a nice little app that lets her use it as a "modem" on her PC. Speed isn't too bad (~1.5mb/s), but the latency sucks - not good for many server requests and certainly not for online gaming!

I have a Verizon Krazer that I piggyback on my wifes account I think cell phones are a PITA and the only reason I have one is because my wife wants me to have one in case of emergency. Half the time I leave it at home and I am lucky if I use more than 20-30 mins a month and compared to my daughter who will rack up to 4000 text messages a month(something I will never understand)

Ahhh thats been a option for a while with many phones. A lot of the phones have GPS built into the phone and just not accessable to end users. And the ones that don't can triangulate on the tower signals, That gets them pretty close to you.

Actually, I am with you a phone should be a phone. My last phone was a PIA to use as a phone. My next phone must be #1 at it's job as a phone. If I can get extra with it and not mess up the phone that would be great!!!!
I guess I agree with you with the exception that more is better.

personally, i will say this. my friend is stressing to me that i need to wait for the 3G iPhone. i dont know though, i would like to, and should be happy with the current one. there doesnt seem to be many problems. despite what i was in my post, there is nothing wrong with the current one for 1/2 the price. only a better camera and more space. and the obvious 3G speed

It's not that I don't want the bells and whistles on a phone per se, but it seems like the manufacturers cut corners on certain features just to put more features in there. I know the trend is going towards having a phone that will do everything, yet small, light, and have decent runtime.
When shopping for a phone, it had BETTER excel at being a phone. It doesn't matter if it can mow my lawn if I can't effectively talk on it!

I am with you, I hate all the garbage they pack on these phones and wish it all concentrated on making the actual phone part better. The best phone I owned was a Panasonic Tough Phone several years ago, I wish I could still get it. It was small but I could throw it against a brick wall and you couldn't tell the difference.
I have GPS built into my car, I have a 80 gig zune, and a camera. These are not functions I need my phone to do for me. I even messed around with some peoples iphones and got tired of the touch screen real quickly. I refuse to pay over 100 for a new phone anyway.

I understand what everyon is saying and agree that when they add more and more features sometimes there are consequences (laggy phone)
im trying to look for the most badass phone that can do everything (hopefully the g3 iphone)
