any update on how you like the CR-01 i found on another site they are going for 280 shipped and cant really make up my mind between one of these or an AX10

I really like it. It is much more complex than an ax10, and the ax10 may be a better crawler. The tamiya is more of a scale 2.2, while the ax10 is more for comps. I prefer the tamiya, as I feel it is built better, but that is just my opinion.

im just looking for something to dork around with, plan on putting my grandpa's new rock patio/ rock garden he is building to good use, i cant decide between the two, the CR-01 looks so awesome and from what i read crawls better than any one would think it would, i know the AX-10 is a good platform and it is 70 bucks cheaper too.... what kind of runtime you getting with the brushless setup and the 5000ma cells?

Well, I radared the truck, with the 13.5 novak, stock 20t pinion and the 5000ma pack I got 13mph. It is faster than most rock crawlers, but it still crawls great due to the sensored motor. It will wheely, and I have abused it quite a bit. Runtimes are stupid, I have not drained a pack yet, and have about 45mins on it. I bought a novak crawler esc, as the ss does not have the neutral brake, and is a bit slow to go into reverse. Otherwise the ss esc is great, does not get hot, and the internal bec has plenty of juice to run both 645 servos and move the wheels even at standstill. The kit has a bunch of parts, and some steps real require 4 hands to do. But I love building kits, and it was fun to do. If you decide to go with rear steering, you will need another servo saver. I do not use the servo savers, just the plastic arms that came with the 645 servos. I had to trim them a bit, but all of the linkages work fine. I set the rear with less throw than the front, and it can cut donuts like a full sized monster truck.

from what i understand its normal to see 2hour runtimes when using ultra high turn crawler motors and high capacity sub-c or lipos, most guys run the 2/3a 1500 cells and can get 30 minutes out of these, very surprising...... and with 13mph and brushless linc if you get hung up on a rock you can just back up and launch that thing over it lol thats wild

Yep, this chassis has great suspension, and can handle the incresed speed. I do a bit of scale jumping, and it is plenty strong to handle 1ft jumps, and the crashes. It is alot of fun, and a welcome change of pace.

BL_RV0 06.01.2008 11:20 PM

So you have it running?

Me?

The cr01 runs fine. I have about 1.5hrs on it.

Calm down Beavis:slap:

It looks just the same, save for the deans plug. I painted the body, but need to put the body posts together and fit it up. I run everything with the body off, this lowers the cg a bit and limits the rollovers. I do need to finish it.

I was contemplating putting the 6.5r hv motor in it, just on 2s. And gear it up to the 25t pinion max. It would have tons of torque! We will see...

BL_RV0 06.02.2008 11:14 AM

That would be cool. A scaler doing a wheelie would be neato.

lincpimp 06.02.2008 11:58 AM

I also have a 3.5 and a GTB that I could put in there. I might be the first to get past 40mph with a cr01!

rootar 06.02.2008 12:28 PM

linc did you see the CR-01 the guy put a scale trophytruck body on rccrawler? that would look perfect for your setup, ill see if i can find a link to it.

This is all great guys, but my Spoon is to Big!!

i posted that in the other thread.... lol thankfully someone caught the reffernce

lincpimp 06.08.2008 11:26 PM

Small update, I finally got the body on it, and have a few more hours on it. I have broken the stock rear driveshaft twice. Luckily they include 2 pair in the kit. However I thought that it could do with some modification!

The stock center driveshafts look alot like the sliders in pedes and rustlers, infact they are almost identical, just a bit shorter. So, I took some metal u joints from my pede bin, and put those on the tranny output shaft. Used the longer pede sliders in the front, fit perfectly, and added about 1/2 inch more contact, as the stock tamiya sliders were a bit short IMO. Still plenty of room for the two sliders to move without biinding so all is ok. I used the stock white plastic tranny outputs from the axle end of the sliders. Did this for two reasons, first the area that sticks in the pede tranny had to be shaved down, and I want a weak area so that the gears in the diff will not break first. I did the same to the rear of the truck, except I had to take about 1/4 inch off the male slider for clearance.

I did notice that the traxxas plastic seems to be superior for this application. It is a bit more rigid, and does not seem to come apart as easily. I am running this truck a bit harder than it should be, but cutting donuts on concrete with 4 wheel steering is so much fun!

I will put some pics up of the finished truck and the center driveshaft mod tomorrow.

Have you jumped it yet?

Not off a ramp, but I have got a few feet of air while running it thru ditches and off stairs. It handles speed (13mph) quite well!

BL_RV0 06.09.2008 09:31 AM

You clocked such a slow car?

Why not, seemed like a good idea! We were radaring some other r/cs at that time, so we figured that we would see what the crawlers could do!

BL_RV0 06.10.2008 08:00 PM

Yeah, why the hell not?

New Shoes for the CR-01!

Not much of an update to this old thread...

Picked up some used proline 8 shooter beadlocks and new proline m3 hammers off the rccrawler forum. Not bad, got it all for 45 shipped...

I do like the proline beadlocks, I have a set on my other 2.2 rig. And the m3 hammers are soft and sticky. Plus my friend runs the hammers on his axial rig and they perform very well. Since the cr-01 is not the lowest cg crawler I did add some weight to the wheels in an attempt to keep it shiny side up. 3oz on each rear wheel and 6.5oz on each front. And the prolines came with memory foams, so that should help too.

I also have a 17.5t motor that I may put in, not sure if it will crawl any better than the 13.5t does, but worth a try. That should put the speed down to around 5mph with a 16t pinion, which is the smallest I can run on the truck.

Heres some pics of the wheels and tires:
