Brushless, Lipo Cr-01 build

So I got a new Tamiya Land Cruiser Cr-01 for my birthday! I am a hopeless Tamiya fan, I have a dozen or so that I have built from kits!

Still building it at the moment, but will use a novak 13.5 with a SS+ esc. I have a bunch or 2s lipos to use with it too.

So far it looks like a very well engineered kit. It has a planetary trans and pede style sliding center driveshafts. It has solid axles and a cool canteliver shock setup with seperate coil springs. I will post some pics of the chassis when I get is assembled. Heres a link:

i know how you feel about those tamiya kits! i love the look of that cr-01, wish the boss would let me get another rc, but that doesn't look good for the near future with a kid due in july.

guess i'll just have to live vicariously through you linc! can't wait to see it!

Good thing you aren't using the crawler ESC, you would probably break something with the neutral brake. I like the sensored motors for crawling though. Castle needs to make one now. Sensored outrunner anybody?

I do like that idea JRH. That would make a great direct to diff setup with the sensor, especially if it could do something like a sensored startup to a certain rpm, then run sensorless with some of the great cc programming. Since castle reps neu now, maybe they could do something like that with the 19 series motors, those things are torque monsters!

I have hit up a few companies to make sensored outrunners, and a few can do it. The problem is that Novak can't/won't tell me how to set up the sensor so that it will commutate properly, and I can't get figures for the max commutation rate on the crawler ESC. Castle could make both ESC and motor now, so they are the next natural choice.

Reason for outrunner vs inrunner in my mind- same RPM per volt for a crawler but with a much larger torque arm and higher commutation cycle/revolution. Basically the amp draw could be higher with an outrunner running at the same speed as a comparable inrunner.

What is the go with the neutral brake. Why will it break things? Neutral brake sounds like a good idea to me on a crawler.

From what I have heard the neural brake is a bit too "strong" for some setups...

I will have some completed body off pics tomorrow. Just need to put the servos in and double check everything. The novak motor and esc fit nicely. This truck has alot of space for gear, easily could fit a pair of escs and a pair of receivers!

Here we go! This thing is fast, I really need to drop down to a 16t pinion from the factory 20t. Good low speed driveability with the novak ss. Only missing the drag brake. So I may buy the crawler system, but will have to find a good deal on it used...

The way the novak is set up, there is no drag brake. You hit throttle and it will coast if the slant is steep enough. It hits the brakes at neutral, so there is no proportional brakes. This doesn't work well on steep slopes, as it will coast until you let off- then it slams on the brakes. Some people like it, some people don't.

Nope it is a pair of maxamps 5000 cells that I had laying around. Figured if I killed them it was no big deal.
