Convert a 2.4GHz Cordless Phone/Docking Station Into Radio System?

I'm curious as to whether it would be possible to convert a cordless phone that you can get for pretty cheap at Walmart or wherever into a 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver to use in an RC car. I'm getting tired of my stock Traxxas AM radios, but 2.4GHz radios are just so expensive. Has anyone else tried to do this? Do any of you electrical experts know if/how this could be done? They seem to have a lot of range and a pretty good signal. I'm not sure how you would divide the channels up though.

Thanx,
Brijar!!!

Look at Losi's 2.4 on ebay at TX/RX can be had for 80...

I bought my Futaba FASST for $170 off of Tower and it was money well spent

drkros3 06.24.2008 01:56 PM

hobbypeople is having a 4 of july sale on the mx3fhss for 139.99$ and if you dont want to wait right now its 149.99$ regular is 179.99

TexasSP 06.24.2008 02:13 PM

Buy the futaba fasst on tower and get it on ez pay for 63 per month.

This sounds interesting, I have an old dishwasher that I wanted to convert into a spaceship. If anyone has plans to do that I will happily pay up to $15 USD for them. I would prefer an ion-drive, as dilithium crystals are hard to come by.

Good luck with your cordless phone radio, I may be interested if a paging feature could be included so that the wife could get in touch with me while I am playing down the street. You know, so that she could let me know when dinner is ready!

I thought of that, but how do I get the dishwasher up to speed to use the ramjet? Solid rocket boosters? should I take the lower rack out, or leave it in?

You obviously know more about this than I do, any info would be greatly appreciated!

snellemin 06.24.2008 03:32 PM

If I remember correctly the lower rack stays in, and two flux capacitors are used.

I use one and love it.

That makes sense, if you just used one it would has 4th order harmonic vibrations in the anti-matter chamber. And leaving the rack in must help with servicing the inertial dampers.

Now Linc, you know darn well we can't discuss prices here. Shoot me a PM though, and we'll discuss a price for my kenmore elite DW -> ramjet interplanetary cruiser plans. As of yet, it's untested. Initial readouts look impressive though ;).

Linc I have some old rusty cast iron pots I will sell you cheap. Put those in and you are guaranteed to get to at least warp 9 although instances of warp 12 have been reported. If you add a the jet dry module it increases power efficiency and gets you 100,000 space miles per tank.

What's_nitro? 06.24.2008 09:20 PM

Brijar, why don't you look at FM radios? They're not as expensive as 2.4GHz but a great improvement over AM none the less.

This discussion about dishwasher spaceships is probably the most funny/interesting thing I've seen in a while. So to add my $0.02, I recommend equipping your dishwasher with a spacial resonance drive. Note that the optional cascaded cold plasma power bridge would yield another 21% efficiency over the standard dark matter fission block.

This technology is being used my the Borgs. Notice how their "Cube" have a Maytag label on the top left.

I knew it, back away, do not assimilate!

I am actually using a discountinued RCA DW at the moment. It will only seat five, but I intend to use some Dr. Who technology to provde Tardis-like internal volume.

Rusty pots, hmm, soounds like a good name for a "mature" adult video actress.

I would prefer if you did not make light of my DIY space cruiser. Spacial Resonance is interesting, but will not run off my proposed fuel of self-produced methane and old bean cans. A cascaded cold plasma power bridge would be useful. I may have to ink that into the design to provide power for the "heated dry" cycle. That was giving me fits, as the jet dry module could not support the power requirements, which I estimate to be in the gigajigamegajoule-neuton range.

We all know that Gene Rodenberry was way ahead of his time...

azjc 06.25.2008 02:34 AM

the funny thing is that all of Star Trek shows they were all based on science fact...I was watching "Enterprise" reruns on the SCI-Fi channel and there was a weird episode that was in the last season where the Captain weas dealing with the Zindi and there was an explosion and the next thing you knew he was on Earth among an alien race that was dupilcating the Nazi's...and my wife claimed BS, than I told her it was possible due to the space/time continuem...later on that was addressed during the show. Later on I tried to explain to her it was part of Einsteins theory of realitivity...and yiou know how far that got...lol

So what your saying is the dishwasher spaceship actually is possible if Captian Kirk was the pilot.

I have a feeling that Kirk would not be enough, although he could "negotiate" us a decent hotel room just about anywhere. Now, if we had Scotty, and Data we would be good to go. It would be a tight squeeze to get them and us in the DW though...

TexasSP 06.25.2008 10:38 AM

The transporters could be re-engineered by Scotty and Data to enlarger the dishwasher to accommodate all of your needs while still only retaining it's original spacial dimensions. It's kind of like magic.

BrianG 06.25.2008 10:50 AM

I told my g/f about this thread last night, and she asked "Why is everyone trying to be mean to the original poster?" Poor brijar. That's what he gets for asking a serious question. :whip:

snellemin 06.25.2008 11:00 AM

What about a Cuisinart HyperJet? Ludicrous speed is easily attainable with that.

jhautz 06.25.2008 11:14 AM

I'm not sure... how fast is Ludicrous speed?

I think they are ranked like this....

Slowest... Light Speed
Faster... Warp Speed
Fastest... Ludicrous speed

Can someone let me know if I have that wrong.

snellemin 06.25.2008 11:24 AM

Looking at the Data sheet from a Cuisinart Hyperjet Module, Ludicrous Speed is the fastest on the current black market. With a Mod2 upgrade, the bottom basket can be omitted and Worf will fit in there as well. But a Jedi might be more usefull.

I think the second level was "ridiculous speed"....

Actually... I think ridiculous speed falls in between light speed and warp speed. So the list would look like this. Again, I'm not sure about any of this. Working from memory here.

Slowest... Light Speed
Fast... Ridiculous speed
Faster... Warp Speed
Fastest... Ludicrous speed

BrianG 06.25.2008 11:46 AM

Me too. I though there were only three levels. But, it's been a while since I saw the movie. Good excuse to watch it tonight!

brushlessboy16 06.25.2008 11:48 AM

could "oh damn" be considered a speed?

thats when u go into ludicrous speed and catch a tail wind.

lincpimp 06.25.2008 11:55 AM

So when will then be now? Soon!

I think this could be quite challenging, you could press 2 for forward, 3 for forward/right, etc, call waiting might really screw things up, but hey can your FASST take messages?

Yeah, thought not...

And if you have some issue you just can't solve, just press 0 for the operator.

Wow, when I got up this morning, I looked at the thread and was like, "WOW! 32 posts overnight! The guys must've had some really good ideas!"

[sarcasm]After reading through the posts, I am a bit discouraged. I don't have a spare dishwasher to modify for space flight! You guys sure are jerks for assuming that everyone and his brother just has a dishwasher laying around. We're not all that fortunate, you know. Oh, and by the way, a Kenmore would be a poor choice for space flight. A whirlpool would be much better.[/sarcasm]

So, is there any chance that we could talk about cordless phones? Or does nobody really have any good ideas for making one into a radio system.
I would think you'd have to use an encoder to encode a signal into the transmitter, then use a decoder to decode the signal from the speaker in the phone, that way you can have multiple channels.
I honestly don't know how encoders and decoders work, or even if this is how they can be used. Someone else would have to know what chips would be good for this and/or how to program them correctly.
The main point is to not have to spend $100+ on a good radio system, though I'll probably end up doing that anyways.

I've considered FM radios, but I'd really have to get a synthesized one, as the "no more channel conflicts" is one of the things I want in a radio system.

I just thought of something a bit different. If you could get a blue tooth receiver on your RC car, you could use your laptop and a Blue Tooth adapter to control the car. Of course you'd then need to adapt your transmitter to talk to the laptop, but that's not hard. Just rewire the potentiometers to an Xbox controller, put a USB plug on the Xbox controller, then use XBCD drivers and you'll have a transmitter that works as a controller for your PC :intello:. That's how I'm making my own Logitech G25 for $65:yipi:.

Brijar!!!

(Thank you to the 5 ½ people that tried to help me with my question)

the thing with the 2.4 ghz band is its the most popular band that is used today and the RC radio systems change frequencies at a very fast rate to get around this I think its something like every 2-5ms. Before I bought my FASST I looked at the FM radios and the FASST didnt cost much more than a synthiesed FM sysytem. There was a link to a sysytem that was about $120 earlier in the thread I would get that and dont try to be McGyver...
