Which vehice to get?
Howdy. I would like some advice on which monster truck or truggy would best fit my needs. I am a basher but I would like something that I can run on the street, in the grass and the occasional dirt hills and is strong as an ox. I would like something more on the larger side. I know a thing or two about brushless so that is what I would prefer to run.
Thanks, Steve |
How about a Revo? A new electric-specific chassis is coming out for it soon.
Convert a monster gt. It is long and kind of big. Welcome to the forum. I not totally sure what you looking for. How big do you want it? A revo is nice size too.
i would suggest a revo all the way and there great incase you ever wanted to race.
Just depends what size truck and type of handling you want.
For a 1/8 scale monster truck for bashing or can be made to handle good if you wanna race the MGT is an easy conversion with an e-maxx tranny.http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...&threadid=1234 If you want a slightly smaller truck with very good truggy like/race handling that can also take a beating,Mikes g-maxx chassied revos (G-Revo)are the tickethttp://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...&threadid=1076 If you want pure race handling, convert a truggy/buggy with a center diff like the lightning stadium or the HPI hellfire which will be out by christmas. The G-revo is the probably the best allrounder i reckon. Just my suggestions,if you want to be creative and do something different, then more power to ya. Of course there's always the good old e-maxx,takes a fair wedge to make a really good one though, whereas the revo front and rear ends are pretty much good to go.Maybe some ally diff cups are probably all you really need for the revo.Daf says the sliders hold up well too.(although it's a little less drool worthy than some of the maxxs here with parts from UE,FLM and so on) Oops,i nearly forgot the savage.Serum will keep you right if you want to convert a savage. His savage is real nice, with lots of custom touches.http://www.serum.demon.nl/NewBorn/ |
First, I would like to welcome you to the forums!
Now, onto your questions: The G-Revo is due in mid November, so if you are willing to wait, this should be a nice vehicle that will offer good durability and excellent handling. I would suspect it to be a nice bashable and raceable ride and should suit both duties extremely well. If you are into doing a conversion, I agree that the MGT is a nice vehicle to do it with. An E-maxx is among the best all around vehicles in my opinion as well (my favorite truck is my g-maxx), and can be hopped up to almost no end. It can get a bit expensive, though! Worth every penny in my opinion! I would put my e-maxx against anything in terms of durability, handling, performance and just pure fun! It is, however, far from stock! |

You all raise good points. How about we start here.
Do you have a side pic of them motors?
Eh?,where?
Isn't that a cooling head from a nitro engine? |
The motor on the right is hacker XL 74mm long, the motor on the left is a plettenberg 370/30/A2S 58mm long.
What turn is that hacker?
20
So it's around 800kv?
You planning to run one of these motors? If you're saying you want to run alot of cells,i think it'll be nigh on useless for bashing etc. due to the weight.good for speed runs though. Would you like to elaborate please? this is a little cryptic for me. |
I run a 9xl nemsis. How many cells have your ran on it? How did it do? How about your run times as well? Sorry for all the questions.
I thinking of running LiPo 18-24v.
you could go more voltage on that motor. I not sure how much you want to run. I figure you should be albe to run about40 volt on it.
The motor can handle more, but I like to keep it under 38.4 nominal voltage, from a safety standpoint.
I don't mean to bother you. I just very curious on the motor. Have you ran it in another truck? I curious to the run times you get.
Actually I am boat guy and I have never run this motor in a car, but from what I understand about it, it's used in 1/5 scale onroad cars and they usually run 10 minutes or so at about 45-50 mph.
You'll need to run very high gearing then,ie with an e-maxx tranny it'd be hard to gear it higher than about 20mph.
Is it the hacker you want to run?is it around 800kv?you never said. 24x800 is less than 20,000 rpm. You'd need a center diff or center slipper with a small spur and a huge pinion. It'd be much easier to get a motor with a higher kv if you want to run 24 volts. It'd give you much more choice of vehicle/tranny.Unless you can make your own pinions or know somewhere to get suitably large pinions. |
I also have brushless motors in the 1500-2200 K/v 2, 4, and 6 poles. What do you suggest?
Must had it geared way up. I run a 9xl with 18 cells. I average about 25 mins with gp3700. I can run it 35-40mph bracket. The run time seems low to me. Have to keep me up to date. I am curious on this motor. Good luck on your project. Have you decided what you going to run?
I was thinking that the larger motor and the right gearing would produce 30-35 MPH speeds and loads of runtime in a fairly large 1/8 truck or something. I really like the revo and the gmaxx because of the high quality hop ups, I would consider something larger if someone had nice gear to throw at it.
I have a gmaxx double extended out to the length of a monster gt. Almost all aluminum except a few minor things. I like it. The revo seems to be nice. I don't own one so that is all I can say. Everyone talks good about them. I am in the process of a monster gt conversion. I am also converting a ofna mbx buggy.
The 1500-2200 k/v is in a better ballpark for the voltage you're talking about in the typical type of trucks and range of gearing we run.
The e-maxx tranny in the G-revo and maxx has quite a bit of reduction compared to a typical 1/8 buggy set up where the only reduction in the center tranny is the pinion to spur. Under 20,000 rpm could be done with the e-maxx tranny but not with the pinions we have commonly available. A truggy with a center diff would be easier though to get 35-40 mph from 20,000 rpm. Some of the guys here have excel spreadsheets for gearing that would help. This is Serums,i haven't seen it though 'cause i haven't got excel: http://www.serum.demon.nl/speedsavage.xls |
Here's a question, if I don't have a donor emaxx or revo, could one be built from aftermarket parts completely? If so what kind of money am I looking at minus the electrics?
Yep,definately.Mike puts complete trucks together for people i think anyway so you wouldn't need a donor unless you want to run stock parts and upgrade gradually.
In the case of the G-Revo,i believe Mike plans to sell complete front and rear end assemblies for those who don't already have a Revo. To build a complete Maxx with parts from companies like UE can cost an arm and a leg,but a nice truck can be done for $1000-$1500 i think. The G-revo would work out considerably cheaper, and dare i say it equally effective given a little more development. Not quite as jaw dropping though. The only reason i'd personally build a maxx over a revo would be due to the appeal of the UE parts.FLM parts are very high quality too, tough and cheaper and they should have hybrid bulks for the Revo soon, hopefully with 1/8 diffs. |
You can build one from nothing. I done my gmaxx that away. It really depends on how much bling you want to when it come down to price. If you don't need the electrical like motor esc and reciver and controller. That saves you some money.
Have you check out ebay? You can get some nice rc on there. Just have to watch.
I've been watching ebay for awhile now, nothing that really interests me.
I may have something that would suit you, Steve. Drop me an e-mail(mike@rc-monster.com) if you are interested in a CF extended g-maxx with FLM combo bulks, UE center shafts, Proline cvds, al. diff cups, etc.) basically, a fully hopped up brushless ready roller in excellent condition.
That sounds sweet. If I didn't have so many I would have to email you mike.
