Making a Micro T the RCM way

I have a micro dt that's been sitting awhile because of lost/broken parts, and I decided that I want to make it into the ultimate micro T. It will be fast, heavy, and RCM approved. It won't be another guy putting a losi brushless system in his mirco t, that's for sure.

I'll post some pics when I make some progress. This might turn into a winter project, but hopefully I get er done soon.

I don't want to give away exactly what i'm doing, but no one has done it before.

eovnu87435ds 07.31.2009 01:20 PM

now these are the projects I like to hear about. the "who cares if its twice as heavy as it's racing competitors, mine still is faster"

blueb8llz 07.31.2009 01:45 PM

this sounds interesting..ill be following up with this thread

BP-Revo 07.31.2009 04:00 PM

THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PI - ok, I'm interested. Hurry and finish it.

Metallover 07.31.2009 04:12 PM

Well, I've got an older pic. I might order some stuff tonight...

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301819.jpg

Just ordered $52.50 worth of stuff from hobbycity.

BL_RV0 07.31.2009 04:31 PM

I know exactly what you're doing I think... Hmm... wait, that's really impractical... I'll PM you with what I think you're doing. Oh screw it, I'll just say. You're making a DD outrunner setup? That SOB will be fast, BC little outrunners don't come in terribly low KV, unless you plan a 1S setup

Not exactly... but close.

brushlessboy16 07.31.2009 05:21 PM

i bet mine is faster if i strap a 2-stage D rocket engine assembly on it :)

simplechamp 07.31.2009 06:04 PM

Neat little cars. I really liked mine, it was my first "real" RC, but I outgrew it too fast. I sat down one day, looked at the Micro-T, and said to myself "Did I really just spend $400 on this thing!?!?"

They're fun to play with, but too limited in what they can do IMO. As with my subsequent RC cars it was equally or more fun to work on than drive. Sold it just recently so I could buy batteries for my E-Revo.

PBO 08.01.2009 07:43 AM

Funny, caught a glimpse of mine looking sad on the top shelf...might get inspired to show the little bugger some love & attention now!?

Another vote for pics

I've got two micro t's just sitting. One all aluminum and one that has been lightened so much it floats away sometimes. Inspire me to bring them back to life!

blueb8llz 08.01.2009 01:29 PM

so these micro t's can handle power and speeds? i would have thought their diffs would be incinerated.

The diff's need to be shimmed. Without some type of shim they will grind after a few runs on brushless and lipo.

simplechamp 08.01.2009 09:46 PM

This was the Micro-T I had before I sold it. Used an SR3500 receiver, fit perfect, but kept it when I sold the Micro-T. Sorry about the poor lighting!

So I got a notice the mail man missed me at my house. It's from china so I have to sign for it. I was home all morning; maybe I was in the shower... I went to the post office to pick it up and the guy told me I can't get it until 3:00 because he still has it in his car. OK. So I start driving home. I pull up to a stoplight and right in front of me is.. A Mail Truck!! So I follow him a short distance until he stops at a mail box and I park in the middle of the road and go show him the slip I got. He said he's not the right mail man. Ahhh, so close! Well, I'm waiting until 3:00 then I'll get my parts from china and post some pics.

rawfuls 08.14.2009 01:07 PM

Yeah, that's happened to me quite a bit of times, gets on your nerves when you have the whole day planned, for when you wait for that sneaky package!

eovnu87435ds 08.14.2009 01:37 PM

Now thats taking the initiative! I've done the same with ice cream men, but not mailmen. What are you doing now? Just staring at the clock for another 2 hours? Or are you figuring out your mail carrier's route for future needs?

EDIT: Ben and I just scored 1/18th scales on a donation thread and so now our minds are ticking as well... its a little bit bigger than yours, but hopefully they all will be equally insane. It will be me with my rc18b, you with your micro dt and ben with his mini t

rawfuls 08.14.2009 01:45 PM

I'd bet Mike knows every route for mail carriers in his city, maybe even state..

Metallover 08.14.2009 01:50 PM

Well I have a vendetta, and I might get another one. Then I'll be able to drive with friends.

I'm working on my pocket bike to burn up time. Making a keychain deans switch, messing with the settings on the esc, cleaning up the wiring, making sure nothing's coming loose.... I'm waiting on a package for that too. I'll pick up a few bolts for mounting the sprocket on that when I go to pick up the package at about 2:40.

Now I only have to wait for 1 hour and 51 minutes.

Foxracin 08.14.2009 02:13 PM

A keychain deans switch?

Only 55 more minutes!!

Foxracin 08.14.2009 03:54 PM

Ahhhhh I see I see. Cool.

Eric G 08.14.2009 04:40 PM

Get the stuff yet?

Metallover 08.14.2009 05:19 PM

Got er all.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301996.jpg

What are in the little boxes, you might ask?

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301997.jpg

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301998.jpg

Got it hooked up and everything. All I need to do is make a chassis, mount the servo, and mount the motors and I'll be ready to go. I soldered everything up and mixed the channels on my radio, and it looks like it'll work great.

I just hope the motors have the same power and everything. If they don't, I'll have to connect the two shafts mechanically and hope it works.

BL_RV0 08.14.2009 05:38 PM

Awesome.

Metallover 08.14.2009 06:20 PM

A servo comparison

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...1/S7301999.jpg

rawfuls 08.14.2009 06:23 PM

Oh god..........
Now if you did that with all 4 wheels...

gtxracer 08.14.2009 06:55 PM

4WD MICRO T! Why aren't you doing this??!/!?

jayjay283 08.14.2009 07:25 PM

those are wheels with the motor built in for a micro T ? man thats the second coolest thing ive seen next to my wifes boobs, I may have to dig my micro T out of the tackle box and rethink the suckness factor of it.. Slap 'em on I gotta see more

Metallover 08.14.2009 08:08 PM

This is the motor - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8478

Shaft is 2mm, stock micro t axles are 1.5mm. I didn't think it would work but I was able to just slide the wheels on. I'll glue them to secure them..

On 2s it should be controllable, but on 4s

Metallover 08.15.2009 11:38 PM

It's ghetto. That's all I can say. It started out pretty good with the motor mount, then it just got really ghetto.

I'm having trouble getting the motors to sync up at startup. It just makes a sound or spins out, take your pick. I tried changing the settings, but all I can change is the battery type and brake on/off. The escs are the weak link. Maybe I can find a better esc... mamba 25? Two really cheap?

I ended up using a y adapter with the radio connectors on the controllers. I just couldn't get them to spin together with the radio. It was a 100% trim to the right and it still wasn't good enough. The Y adapter solved that issue.

Once it starts up, the thing TAKES OFF. I thought it would be controllable on 2s, but that might be an overstatement.

gtxracer 08.15.2009 11:47 PM

Haha, nice! You can probably find two Mamba 25s for pretty cheap on RCC. I sold one for like $25 a while back.

That chassis and gearbox mount won't last long though...

rawfuls 08.16.2009 12:11 AM

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Particularly the last picture!

Metallover 08.16.2009 12:27 AM

Just had a big scare. The esc's wouldn't do anything. I took it back and resoldered all the motor wires. Then after that didn't work, I checked the voltage of the battery. I didn't get a reading out of the deans plug. Crap. I tore open the battery and didn't find anything but a good soldering job. I eventually pulled the red wire from the deans plug and it came right off from the good solder joint. It broke right before the solder. I re-attached it and now It's recharging from 2.92v/cell. This battery is becoming as ghetto as the truck!

It will be fast though... I hope with a fully charged battery the startup will be smoother too.

rawfuls 08.16.2009 12:28 AM

No one cares.

We only care about the videos!:whistle:

:na:

BTW, are you gonna use shocks for the rear?

Metallover 08.16.2009 12:32 AM

The motor mount has a little flex in it, but it is going to get some work as it will fail if I don't fix it, due to bending in crashes. (spinouts)

I'll make a vid once I get most of the bugs worked out, so wait until christmas and you'll see a vid..

And since you were so worried, the battery is fine, charged it at .1a and now it's at 7.4v.

rawfuls 08.16.2009 12:33 AM

Thanks for the headsup, I was SO worried about the battery!:rofl:

Hope to see those future videos!

brushlessboy16 08.16.2009 12:53 AM

Which esc's are those again?

and did they work with the pistol grip radio?

Metallover 08.16.2009 12:58 AM

Why wouldn't they work with a pistol grip radio? They work fine, and they're http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=6456

Maybe they're sensing a bigger motor? Maybe I shouldn've gone with the smaller 10a one?

servo is very fast compared to stock - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...?idProduct=663

motors again while I'm at it - http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8478

brushlessboy16 08.16.2009 01:12 AM

They are setup for Air radios which have differnt settings which is why the Pisticks(sp) adapter came about.

Now wheres the vid?
