How do you open laptop battery packs?

I have tried prying it open with a small screwdriver but it just doesnt seem to want to pop open. I dont want to get medieval with it because i dont want to ruin the case. I know some of you guys have replaced the cells in these, but how did you open it?

lincpimp 01.26.2011 01:40 PM

Hammer?

snellemin 01.26.2011 02:11 PM

Yea Hammer!

seriously, I use either a dremel or twist them open.

The cases wont just pop open...they are glued at the seam. I've opened them using a razor blade (new one) with a stopper to keep from cutting too deep.

snellemin 01.26.2011 03:18 PM

Depends dude. I pop some pretty easily. HP part#395793-311 is one for example.

josh9mille 01.26.2011 03:35 PM

mine is hp# 485041-002 if that helps at all

snellemin 01.26.2011 03:55 PM

Those I just cut in between the seems and then crack them open.

lincpimp 01.26.2011 04:06 PM

12 gauge will open them nicely. I have one like this if you want to borrow it:

Anyway why do you wish to open your laptop Lipo anyway? Are you trying to replace some cells or something of that nature? Or are you just curious to see how they are setup? Our 15 year old opens his up after they are of no use just so he can see how they are put together. He is a computer geek, and wants to learn everything he can PC related. Replacing cells usually is not worth all the trouble, because getting the case back to like new condition is very difficult. Just thought I would share that. Good luck with whatever you are trying to accomplish.:mdr:

I use the laptop cells in my TX, RC's, Flashlights, drills, you get the idea.

Actually when I saw the picture, I noticed the two boulders. Never saw the third one.

Well my battery only lasts for maybe 2 minutes so i need a new one. They cost an arm and a leg so i figured i would just replace the cells. That is what us po' people do!

Thats cool. Try going on line and google "how to" for computer Lipo repairs or something like that. You may find some good tutorials that can help to overcome your laptop Lipo issues. I did the same thing when my kids started experiencing issues with their PSP's. I learned how to strip them down and rebuild them, and even found really cheap replacement parts with Links from various sites. I was able to fix both of them and even replaced a broken screen for like $30. We were ready to just throw them into the trash, until on of our kids suggested tutorials on line. Everyone loves to save a few dollars. Its the smart way to go for anyone who does not have a six figure sallary, or a bottomless bank account.

I looked in my box of batteries and couldn't find any to match. However they are like 28 bucks on amazon.

+1

PSPs are easy as heck to fix up.
Had a smashed in screen once..
Took a full 1 minute to open it with a tutorial, find the model number, and order the screen.
When the screen came in, took me probably 5 sweaty minutes to replace it, then almost had a heart attack because of a random dead pixel bar... Turned out to be a sticker...

Easiest $50.
