Lowered Centre Of Gravity and Traction
Just bought myself a G2 for my E-Maxx, can't wait for it to arrive!
Anywho, I was wondering, would a lower Centre Of Gravity chassis like the G2, help me with traction on my track? Our track has some parts where I am just constantly wheel-spinning and I have been told, and have figured that the Maxx is too light, however, having all that weight slung much lower, will this help me? I'm a little confused either way. I can think of why it could help and why it couldn't. I know that It will help me to no end on corners when I use my stock maxx tyres, which i'm rather fond of. I also know it will stop my maxx from wheely-ing as much (well a tiny tiny bit :018: ) |
The gmaxx helps on wheeling. Have you tried a set of mulchers if the track is kind of loose. The seem to grip well. they got the new 40series out to.
|
I find mulchers not that great, of all my tyres, mashers are pretty good, only slightly bettered by the stock maxx tyres. Here is the track.

It might cost you some traction, with the weight sitting low it can't move as well (weight transfer/ rocking back and forth) so it might lose some traction. On the other hand with less weight transfer, more weight will be on the front wheels, therefore it might get more tire surface on the track and increase traction. I can't tell you by experience, because the track i run on is sandy and the best way to drive is drifting

Just an idea here, especially since I don't know your track particularly, but you could also try a different like. It appears as though your having trouble were the typical line is. Try something like the line in purple. The black appears to be the usual line people run. However, if you carry more speed into that first turn in the picture and go wide then on the inside, you might have an edge since you would have more traction and be able to carry more speed.

Thanks squee, i'll give it a go. Since the gorillamaxx lowers the centre of gravity, I wont be so prone to rollover using my maxx tyres, hence, more corner speed, so I might get away with it.
I only race against 3 stock savages, an MTA4 and a slightly modded LST anyway. The maxx in stock setup with 9XL has won me a medal against them, can't wait to see how amazing it's gonna be with the G2. Did you use paint aswell then :) ? |
:018: Yup, the G2 should help considerable. And yes, thats paint :028:
|
You should be careful when racing against them now - you spank them too bad - and youll be racing by yourself - LOL - That chassis is a huge improvement - post back and tell us if you agree... Good racing...
|
You will love the chassis and it can take a beating
|
Have you looked int other chevron type tires? The Imex Trail Dawgs are a similar tread pattern, but are much softer than the Maxx tires. You could aslo try modifying the tread on the stock tires to increase traction. Start by slicing every other rib so that they are more flexible. If that doesn't work, try cutting every other rib so that look more like knobbies.
|
Well I like how the Maxx tyres handle, minus the traction part.
I got my G2 this morning  I bought it at midnight on thursday!!!!! Un-believeable service Mike. I'm going to leave the setup as it is but lower the ride height a little. Hopefully this combined with the G2 should stop all the wheelspin. I'm also gonna buy an 18t pinion (16t currently), as it is very very front happy, so it wont accelerate quite as fast. I also put the 7 cells into the rear 7 slots and moved my receiver and hump pack to the rear, hopefully this should all help. Anyway, i'll let you al know how it goes once I get the maxx running again. Had a wipe-out and took out the stock chassis, a skid plate, steering rach and a set of bulkheads, good excuse to get a free G2, huh? :018: Hotncold - I agree, at the last rampage (official race days with medals and stuff) I won the MT A Final' by 45 seconds (a lap is about 34 seconds). Squee - Paint rocks :027: ! CCristo - I was considering cutting lines in the edges of the tyres like this: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y21...ren/e-maxx.jpg I'm not sure if that would help alot, maybe cutting the lines further in? If that fails, CCristo I will get me some imex trail dawgs :) . |
I wouldn't ge the trail dawgs. I have NEVER heard anything good about Imex tires. I would go for the new Traxxas 3.8" Chevrons. They should help a little because of less sidewall flex and the sides of the chevrons aren't so tall. http://www.traxxas.com/products/nitr...ccessories.htm
|
What about sporttraxx tires...
My CF MT's hook up on grass rather well once you get going and the Sporttraxx's have taller and more spread out knobs so they should be even better in grass. Also, the taller and more spread out knobs should really help in the loose stuff... I have been kinda eying this thread and the Sporttraxx idea just smacked me in the head... Also, from what I heard, the Sporttraxx's are supposed to be good all around... |
The mulchers get much more traction that the sport traxx. IMO
|
Yea, but the mulchers lose alot of traction on the packed stuff....the Sporttraxx's at least retain some there, and still work well in the grass and pretty ok in the loose stuff.
Just a thought. |
Since he said he likes his stockers for his track, I would go with Traxxas' new 3.8" chevron.
|
I got to test it today at the track, it only breaks traction occasionally now, and i'm VERY happy with it. It corners as well as my brushless Lightning Truggy now.
Awesome Job to the Gorillamaxx Team! |
I know what you mean. I finally got my LSP-R running right last night. Took 6 months for me to figure out what the problem was! Ok, lets be honest, I only worked on it about 4 times in that 6 months :p. Anywho, I was surprised as to how well it handles. The Lightning is probably the best handling truck I've ever driven.
|
I was lapping quicker with the Maxx than I was with the Lightning :) .
|
What!?!?! What setup do you have in the Maxx? It must be a hotter motor, right?

G2 Chassis Stock Maxx Tyres 45Wt oil all round Stock shock positions with a little extra spacers in 4 shocks 9XL on 14 cells Lightning is: Mashers on some truck-ish proline rims stock shocks with an extra spacer each 10XL on 14 cells The maxx just feels more solid around the track, like its hugging the ground better. If the lightning were running heavier shock oil and maybe a tooth or 2 higher on the pinion I reckon we'd be seeing a good fight. I can slide a little better with the lightning though. But i just LOVE how the maxx handles with the G2. Slight difference in a straight line but nothing massive. |
Are you running stock shocks with the Maxx?
Step up to some PowerStrokes (if you can find some - they are out of production). I had some on my E-Maxx (now on my T-Maxx that I am going G2R), and they handle awesome on both trucks. It also somehow cuts down on wheelies alot, but I dont really get much squat either... They just work awesome. |
Yup, I had them to and they are by far the best shock I've ever seen/used.
|
Its a supermaxx project, so i'm expecting towered VBS 8-spider diffs and SuperShocks at the begginning of September :) .

thats a big track darren why wont you try some bow tie (Mt). there pirtty good getting me a piar soon |
I have some RD tyres which are bowtie copies and i dont like them that much, the turning on them isnt nearly as good as the chevrons. Chevrons are more monstrous anyway :) .
|
Darren that is a huge track too, how long are your mains?/ or laps. your bl must get hot.

lol my mistake. |

That's an insult mike :) .
After a 5min race (usual length) my 9920 hits 155 and 9XL is about 150. The 9XL has a heatsink, but the shell had no holes in it. |
Hi guys just thought i'd let you all know how I liked the chassis, the maxx was at its first race meeting since seeing the G2 X-Brace chassis put in. Also grabbed me a G3 motor mount.
I was running rings round the competition! I was out-handling modded savages and revos. This chassis, race-wise is a must have. The second place runner was a revo with an RB 323. In the final I lapped him twice! I was only a few seconds off of the truggy pace and was lapping seconds better than 1/8 buggies. If your Maxx is ever going to hear the word race, you MUST buy one of these chassis'. Traction-wise, it's helped alot too. Big up to gorillamaxx for this one! |
Did you expect anything less? :p
|
got me one last week darren!!!
|
Mike, you'll love it!
Squee I was expecting to win, of course, but I wasn't expecting to lap everyone at least twice! I only race with 14 cells! My best lap time was a 31.9 the truggys were pulling 30.5s and the 1/th buggies were on about 33. Can't say how much I love this chassis! |
wow those are great times, your also running on stock tires amagine new and more grippyer tires!!
|
Darren, I know you don't really like stuff like the Crimes and Bow Ties, but maybe some of the new Badlands Mt's? From what you've told us about your track, they look like they might work quite well.
|
That's a good suggestion, looking at the track i think that's the tyre i'd try aswell.Keep the wheels std offset though and not the +1/2",more traction on the narrower offset.
Darren, where abouts is the track?i'm not that far from Carlisle.Couple of hours from Glasgow. |

You're what!? Check out our site. www.csor.co.uk We're close to hamilton/East Kilbride. If you look on/log onto the forum my name on there's 'Darren' too. Says comittee under my name because im race director :) . You gotta get down to our track! P.S. What cars do you run? |
Cool, nice club you got going there.i'd love to come along, only limitation is my health at the moment, hopefully soon i can do it.It's about a 2 hour drive from here.
I run brushless LSTs and a G-maxx which is in the works,a few other cars aswell. Here's a link to one of my LSTs,the current incarnation is on page 2http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2739 |
