Pics of balooning tires.

Which tire do you guys think would be better for a top speed run, the tire on the right or the one on the left?
My guess is the one on the right just because it has a dual contact patch as apposed to a single contact patch in the middle. Let me know what you think.
Btw, that is only about half throttle.
Here's the pic

i like the pic, i think proline bowties would be good for a high speed run, show us a pic with fulll throttle :)

HotnCold 04.02.2005 10:35 AM

I am at a loss -i have never seen the dual ( right ) contact patch - have you driven that on on the road yet? - I would be interested to hear the comments - It am purely speculating on this one - but wouldnt it be harder to control with 2 little contact patches rather than one larger one ? - i have no idea...

RC-Monster Mike 04.02.2005 10:37 AM

I think the single contact patch tire will be the better option (left side). The one on the right looks like the two "contact patches" are slightly different in size, so you may actually only have one smaller contact patch on the road under full power/speed.

HotnCold 04.02.2005 10:38 AM

I had a 50/50 shot on that one - lol

You need to use duct tape that goes inside the tire. Works like a charm!! I have got some movies of this modification;

here is the movie without the tape

And this is the one with tape.

The thing with balooning tires on a non centerdiff MT is this;

The front tires get bigger than the rear tires when you drive it, Once this happens, that difference in diameter will put A LOT! of stress on your drivetrain, and it also takes a lot of energy from your setup. Plust the truck gets very unstable on high speeds...

Here is the balooning of my savage tires, with a bit too high gearing..

and this was what happend when driving that truck once.. i must say; Those tires are extremely soft!

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 04.03.2005 06:27 AM

Holy cow! I didnt know it made that much of a difference.
How many times are you supposed to wrap the tape around the tire?
Thanks.

Serum 04.03.2005 06:29 AM

two times around.. (so the tire is in balance and the tape is covered completely)

mt_enthusiast 09.06.2005 11:07 PM

can you confirm the steps to doing this? I heard the trick was to turn the tire inside out and place it on the foam insert before wrapping the tire with the duct tape.

Serum 09.07.2005 02:14 AM

That's how i did it..

Waxxxymunkee 09.08.2005 04:01 PM

I can't belive what a difference it makes I now know the race secret I can't wait to do this I always have a balloon on my inside front tire when hitting the corner thanx guys :)

Serum 09.08.2005 04:08 PM

You're welcome.!

coolhandcountry 09.08.2005 04:11 PM

When that tire come apart. did it pop serum? I had one blow apart to. It popped when it let go. Almost like it had air in it. I still want to try that duct tape trick.

Dafni 09.08.2005 04:16 PM

I'll try it too, next time I glue some rubbers.

Hey Serum, this pic with the balloning tires on your Plettage... wow, must have been a really fast camera. The tires are not even slightly blurred.

Serum 09.08.2005 04:20 PM

You don't even see the pinion move if you look closely.. Some guys told me i editted the pic.....

Dafni 09.08.2005 04:39 PM

Ye gods! Now this is an amazing snap shot. You captured the pinion of a WOT Plett.

Rene, you cheater :p Just joking

Serum 09.09.2005 01:13 AM

LOL...

some stretching wih adobe photoshop does it every time..

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 09.09.2005 02:50 AM

LOL. I remember that thread Serum, (on Traxxas' forum I believe?) where people were accusing you of faking that picture.

I ended up taping the inside of those tires and it did make a HUGE difference. Practicly no balooning at all. I'll have to take another picture when I get my Maxx put back together so you can see a before and after pic.

dabid 09.09.2005 12:24 PM

I still don't quite get how you're supposed to go about taping the tires to prevent ballooning, I was under the impression that you could just put a layer of duct tape on the inside of the tire and it'd work fine......is that wrong?

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 09.09.2005 03:39 PM

That is exactly how I did it dabid. It is a little difficult to get the tape inside however, so I turnned the tire inside out, wrapped the tape around, then turned it rightside in. I also purchased extra wide duct tape to make sure it covered side to side.

coolhandcountry 09.09.2005 06:04 PM

If you use duct tape. Is it like nascar? The truck will be good for 200mph.

Serum 09.09.2005 06:25 PM

Amen, like Nascar..

You guys ever seen the vids i made with and without tape?

just go to rcpics.net and search for serum, they will show up for those that are interested..

coolhandcountry 09.09.2005 07:21 PM

I seen them serum. That is what makes me what to use it. Keep the tires where the supposed to be. I think they should put belts in the tires like a real car tire. Just add the fiber ones not steel. Then you would not need the tape.

Serum 09.10.2005 01:54 AM

I thought that some 1/10 tires have got this fibre..

dabid 09.10.2005 02:14 AM

I had some belted slick tires on my HPI RS4 Rally back in the day for parking lot driving, but that was only for on road, I had the Pirellis for off roading. :L:
