Joe's FLM build

Hi guys,

I received my conversion kit from Mike a couple of days ago & started building over successive nights. Here's what I have so far :

thats one of the sweetest savages I have ever seen. just clean up the wiring, and you will be ready to go. Is there anything keeping the battery from sliding forward? seems like it would slide in a hard crash then hit the slipper and tear a couple of cells to peices.

t-maxxracer32 02.02.2008 10:13 AM

it looks like there is a little black plastic peice if you look closely.

awsome truck dude. looks great!

cemetery gates 02.02.2008 11:10 AM

WOW! twisted toys shock towers! I am using them too! Just be careful, I have already broken one set and I believe they are out of production. Sweet savage man!

Bye:mdr:

jhautz 02.02.2008 12:28 PM

Very Nice Joe!! What motor battery combo is that?

What is that you are using to limit your down travel on the arms? Looks like green string? I want to limit my downtravel but cant seem to find anything pre-made out there for the savage so I was going to make something myself.

jnev 02.02.2008 01:37 PM

Awesome Savage man!! Looks great. Let us know how the new chassis performs, will you.

Serum 02.02.2008 01:59 PM

You could put some effort in wiring!

BP-Revo 02.02.2008 03:00 PM

That looks great. The only thing I would suggest is that you make SURE that the battery cant slide forward and hit the spur...as that would create some serious havoc if it did (pack bursting into flames, setting truck on fire, etc).

captain harlock 02.02.2008 03:26 PM

I must do a Savage conversion. Man! The more I see it the crazier I become.

I'll build a full aluminum Savage with a 1950/10 and 12s 4900mah Evo25 to sail to the moon.

Yes, more money to pour....God have mercy on me...:(

Front battery stopper detail

Hi cemetery gates - you're right, those are tt shock towers. I think i must bought one of the last pairs before he decided to call it quits. This shows the age of my truck.

t-maxxracer32 is right - there is a piece of delrin stopper in the front to prevent the battery from slidng forward & gettint torn to bits by the spur.

Hi jhautz - I'm bought a 5S 5000mah from www.hobbycity.com for slightly more than USD100. Quality is a little suspicious though. Before I have even start to use it, one of the small wires connecting to the tabs has broken off. I had to open up the pack & do some surgery. Kind of scary considering that I was pretty exhausted late last night. I am using a 7XL with a BK9920 on 15/49 gearing. I was using this combo with 14cell Nimh in my old conversion. However, I was also using a 60mm fan blowing across the esc. I hope this combo is stable in this current setup.

Hi Serum - I'm a messy guy. My wiring is usually just an afterthought

captain harlock - 12S is the way of the future - I salute u. I myself am trying a 8S buggy but hit some obsticles.

Joe Ling

MTBikerTim 02.03.2008 09:59 PM

Please tell us how the pack goes. I'm interested.

david lamontagn 02.03.2008 10:25 PM

I've an SS kit here and i'am realy think to convert it into brushless. But i'll wait to see how the rear center driving hold up. It's veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy long, and i'am not sure about the solidity of this shaft.

jhautz 02.04.2008 12:09 AM

Joe,

What are the green pieces of what looks like rope holding your suspension from extending all the way? Is this something you made or something you bought. I am looking for a good travel limiter for the savage.

Where did you get it?

Sorry for missing the answer on this. This is a tip I picked up from savage central. Essentially it's just a piece of nylon string/rope or equivalent that u can buy from local hardware store. I rope it round the tower to the thingie (what's that word) connected to the tie rod (rod end ?) at both ends. The main intention is to limit the over extension of the shocks to protect them when the trucks lands. A crude equivalent to what droop screws do in a buggy or truggy.

Regards,
Joe Ling

PS : I'll try to shoot a few details if you say the quality of my photographs are good . Out out out ! Sorry, my ego trying to take over there

jhautz 02.04.2008 01:23 AM

Thanks Joe. Yea. Id like to see how its set up in a little more detail. I want to limit the down travel of the arms a bit and I feel that just shortning the stroke on the shocks will just tear the shocks apart in any kind of crash.

Thanks joe. Those are great detail pictures. How does it work? Any issues you have found? How hard was it to get them all the same length?

To be honest, I can't say I've tested this thoroughly as I have had only a few runs on it. However, I have another Nitro Savage with LST shocks with similar setup & I've had more time on that with good results.

No major issues with this so far. It's not that difficult to get to the correct length. I am using one continuous piece of string & tied it together at a point at the shock towers (note : tied the string to itself, not to the tower or body post thing)

Joe Ling

generalg 02.05.2008 12:40 PM

Joeling, what motor are you using in this conversion?

joeling 02.06.2008 12:23 AM

Hi generalg,

I'm using a 7XL on 5S with 2 speed gear with 15/49 pinion/spur. The BK 9920 is set to forward only mode with no brakes (I'm using mechanical brake). I had a 60mm fan powered direct from the 5S battery blowing across the esc before I updated to this FLM conversion. In that setup, the combo worked well. I have not had a chance to try out this new setup.

BTW, your airbrushed bodies look very cool . I am a fan of true fire paint scheme. Do u ship to Malaysia ?

Regards,
Joe Ling

MTBikerTim 02.06.2008 01:54 AM

That's impressive. I'm amazed the 7xl doesn't get hot.

generalg 02.06.2008 01:28 PM

Joeling sent you a PM.

joeling 03.18.2008 12:14 PM

Hi guys,

After a little off time due to other distractions, I'm starting to slowly work towards getting the truck onto the track. Here are some updates :

I find that the old MGT body fits this extended savage pretty well. What do u think ? The CEN shocks work out nicely too, We'll see wether they can stand the abuse that will be thrown at them :whip:.

Joe Ling, what happened to the twisted toys shock tower? You dont like them?

After a little tip from cemetery gates in an earlier post, I found that the TT towers are cracked near the bolt for the shock. Pity as I always thought that they were bullet proof.

Anyway, let's hope the CEN shocks hold up.

Regards,
Joe Ling

Serum 03.19.2008 02:43 AM

Yeah, they are far from bulletproof.

I heard/saw the same crack in these towers on another savage.

I am currently working on a buggy tower for the savage, i have got a few waiting for assembly (waiting on my savage and flextek arms to arrive) I'll get you guys pictures once installed. they have got an ultimate low profile and are roughly 2.5-3cm lower than the FLM and stock towers.

joeling 03.22.2008 10:16 AM

More update. Pretty close to runner this truck now :

Hi guys,

Had a little fun in the mud earlier. Managed to kill my esc though. Time to look something more economical & use a lower kv motor. While it worked, the truck was silly fast. It really needs a wing I think.

Great looking Savage once again.

Updates?

joeling 05.02.2008 04:37 AM

Well, nothing much to update at the moment. I have the air esc from China but am too lazy to do anything at the moment. Working on a Jammin' that's been lying around for the past year. I think I'm going to be able to run her this weekend.

As for the savage, I've decided to wait for the Monster to arrive b4 I do any cleaning & fixing & swapping out the motor for a milder unit.

Well, after nearly 3 months at the cleaners, my FLM savage is ready for a little fun this weekend. She's still using the BK9920 but with 2 pcs of 12V fans added now. I have since upgraded to HPi big bore shocks. Have also added a wing. Let's see how she holds up this weekend.
