[NEED INFO] custom centre diff
 

Hi everyone,

im thinking about making a custom centre differential unit for my G3 chassis. Could you guys please point me in the right direction of what the best diff to use is. I was looking at the OFNA spider centre diff or something from Xray. I'll need the spur to be mod1 pitch as well, so it can work with all the pinions i already have.

Can anyone post some links to some designs for a CD as well, as i'm not too sure how to make it, i was thinking of just modding a CD assembly from a nitro to fit. Or make one along the lines of this, only alot better...

i wasn't planning on running a CD, but with a 1527 in my truck i think i'll be needing one :whistle:

I would go with an ofna, hotbodies, or kyosho cup, the hardened hb internals, and a plastic 44t kyosho spur. All of those cups are the same, and the 44t is one of the smallest spurs so it may fit the rail spacing easier.

Are there any big differences between the internals of f/r diffs compared to centre diffs. I'm thinking of getting an 8 spyder diff and just wacking a kyosho spur onto it. Not too sure if the spur will fit as well????

Will any brand mounting blocks fit any CD's, im thinking of getting the xray CD mounting plate set of off the XT8, and using an OFNA spider CD

I think most 1/8 diffs use the same bearings, so that should be okay. Front, rear & center all have the same internals I believe.

the spider diff has 6 mounting screws, and the kyosho spur wont fit, it has 4. The spider diff has 46 or 48, and I believe IIRC a 52 tooth version, if you're worried about metal to metal wear it's not that big of a deal with mikes hardened pinions. Check out Mikes custom direct drive unit in the thread RC monster direct drive unit in the customer testimonial and feedback section, I bought oneand a 46 tooth spider diff I'm going to tun in an flm e-maxx. It's just like the center diff you pictured, but all aluminum and very sturdy. It is designed for an flm chassis, but as I stated, it's just like the one you pictured, and could easily be mounted on a gorillamaxx chassis.

At the moment i'm going to go with a similar design to its me's CD setup in his project (see, muggy diff thread in the t/e maxx section), using the stock motor mount plate. I'll probably fit the Gmaxx single motor mount i have now, have some Al. braces OFNA or Xray, and cut 3mm CF top and bottom plates.

So i've been doing some research into various diffs and designs, ie. torsen, spider etc. an i think i'll just go with what linc firstly suggested, seems like a bulletproof setup. One thing, does anyone know if any manufacturer makes an aluminium diff cup for a hot bodies diff, (not including nova rc)???

I'd like to know too- NovaRc has a patchy reputation when it comes to alloy diffcups...

Out of all the company's ive tried Maxxamizer/FLM/Nova, Nova had the least amount of "clearance" required to use there cup.

will the maximizer diff cups for the savage fit the hot bodies diffs, as i think hot bodies and hpi are the same.

and no I dont think so HB was its own company long before HPI owned it, I bet it wouldn't hurt to try if you have a cup lying around?

i just shot maximizer a question, so just have to wait for a reply i guess

The savage cup will fit the HB diff, but you will need to shim it.

I have not the slightest clue on how to shim a diff, can anyone point me in the right direction. Also, what weight diff fluid do people normally run in a centre diff??

You would need to shim the pinion I believe and the internal gears. For an idea on HOW TO, you can look at the UE diff instructions on the UE site. He gives pretty good insite on how to do it properly. Basicaly, you just need to make sure that there is no "play" inside and outside of the diff.

IS there a place that simplifies all the parts that go together as one ?
I keep reading different things and cant figure out what part goes with what for the Center diff and for the frnt/rr diff mods
