Snapped shaft on Medusa 36-70-1600.

Hey guys... I was running my truggy on the street yesterday and I heard a small clicking noise and brought it in to check it out. Looked fine, so I kept running. About 30 seconds later, I was accelerating to wheelie, when the truck stopped, starting rolling backwards and made a loud, low-picthed screaming growl sound when I revved the motor to anything above 0, can't really describe it any better. I ran over to look and see WTF had happened, thinking my gear mesh had come off or I blew a diff. To my surprise, I could only see the can of the motor, no shaft. It was gone. :diablo: About 10 mins later of looking revealed the shaft with the pinion attached to it. Now I have the motor removed. Smells normal and the windings look fine. Motor is not seized but extremely hard to turn, (harder than normal, and sounds really bad when you turn it, indicating either one or both bad bearings...). The drivetrain is free and truck rolls fine, I was on street without any pebbles that could lock the drivetrain. Shaft just sheared off before it enters the front bearing. The snap is recessed about 3/16" from the front of the can. Can medusa replace this or will I have to pay? I can get pictures if needed.

Doesn't sound like you did anything wrong so I'm guessing manufacturer defect. I'd contact Medusa to see if they'll cover it under warranty.

Get pics. sounds like the bearings fouled your gear mesh causing the shaft to snap under hard acceleration.

The Medusa motors have a 2 yr. warrante I believe so send them a e-mail to confirm this. You should be under warantee if you bought it w/in the last 2 yrs....

What is Medusa's phone number? Are they open on saturdays?

Probably right, that would explain the ticking.

Here is the email I sent to medusa:

Hello Medusa Research,

I've installed one of your medusa 36-70-1600 motors in my 11 pound brushless truggy conversion on 6S lipo with a MMM. The shaft sheared off yesterday, about 3/16" into the can. Motor makes a very bad grinding noise when any throttle is applied, so I think one or both of the bearings have gone bad also. The windings look fine, and the motor does not smell strange. My drivetrain is free, and I was running on the street, so I doubt a rock locked my drivetrain. Attached are a couple pictures of the motor. I have about 4 hours of runtime on this motor and besides this failure, I have been very pleased with it. I bought the motor in early february from the RC-Monster store, and I am one of the forum members there, specifically I am BL_RV0 on the forums. This motor is still in its warranty, as I've only had it for 3 months.

Thanks for your time,

Ian Arnold

I could actually drive to the Medusa warehouse from where I live...only 1hr. away. I am sure that they will take care of you. I had v/good dealings w/them before.

That's good to hear. I hope everything works out. Do you think I could send them the motor and cash and have them send me a 80-1600 back?

He is right, it sometimes is a defect, because i had the same issue with a 36-60-2000kv medusa motor. iwas running pretty hard and slowed down, then coming out of a turn...a loud snap, i ran over to it and found the shaft snapped behind the bearing, weird huh? then i called them up and they said they would replace it under warranty, i only had for 2 months about. :yipi:

Your shaft broke in the same spot as mine.
