The brushlessboy16 curse.
So I got my rx8 returned, with a lower PCB replacement.
set it up, great, made sure every connection was well soldered.. ran great ALL DAY. qualified 5th and 4th. But just as my luck with the last one I didnt make even 1 lap of the main, about 3 turns from the start of the race I lost power, I ended up coasting into the dip between two jumps, a turn marshal goes to have a look at the car and signals me to give it a little trigger, a few light taps of the throttle- nothing... crap- I start to walk down from the driver stand and here BANG! and the sound of grown men screaming (like little girls I might ad) the esc is shooting flames out the sides of my car! so now im taking 5-6 steps a time down the steps then truck across the track to my car.. by the time I have gotten there they had buried my car to the shock tower in dirt.... I think it actually ran through a guy who was gawking at my smoldering dirtcovered mess. yyanked my my battery out and chucked it clear away from people into a patch of grass in fear of it going up. Coming back to my pit first checking the voltage of my battery (it was fine) and then i went to go roll my car on my pit table...:gasp: felt like someone was holding 100% brake, windings in my motor are completely shot. Then i Look to the esc to see if any of the wires were touching. I find this : http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...004091644a.jpg http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...1004091619.jpg Two of the 5 posts are completely missing- esc is bricked, motor is bricked. What caused this, I know that it failed, i want to know why. Esc is still under warranty- but who pays for my toasted motor... -Ben.:diablo: |
I wonder maybe if you secure the wires better you'll have better luck? Maybe the stress on them gets them to short. Use 5 or 6 zip ties to secure your wires and see if that helps.
You seem to have pretty bad luck Ben. |
ironic, how your tekin esc detonated, took out ur castle motor. your tekin motor comes in tomorrow, and u have nothing but a castle esc to run it with
|
Quite ironic, I just hope i can figure this thing out.

Your battery is the only think in common...

Wow, talk about a real curse...
What is this, the 15th ESC? |
Quote:
Zippy 5000mah 20c 4s SMC 4100mah 4s. Each run great and are not hotter then about 108 degrees after a run.. |
it looks like something shorted the bottom of the posts. I know that they used to put an alloy plate covered in stiky stuff inbetween the boards, but now they only put a small pice of fiberglass(?) that can brake off easly, mabey that broke loose??

Ben,
It looks like you might have a cold solder issue. I don't know if anyone noticed in the close up pic, but I see there isn't enough solder on the wires and that might have caused the problem. I tin the crap out of my wires to make sure it will always have a strong bond after I'm done soldering. |
I did, solder was damn near dripping off the wire, then heat up the post and the solder filled the little cup in the post.
|
Yeah I'm sure the heat from those hellish flames melted the solder off of the wires... Man, I gotta say you have worst luck with electronics. Maybe it's back to brushed and one of those old relay controlled ESCs?

Need to develop a MBLESC.
servo controlled bl esc. |
Ben,
When you get the ESC back from Tekin, tin the front of the motor and battery posts a good amount and do the same to the wires, add shrink tube to all the wires and solder to the front of the posts. I have 3 Tekin ESC and 2 of them have the wires soldered to the top and one I have solder the way I mentione above and seems way better. It offers much more surface area. I have a bug with my camera, but as soon as I fix the problem I'll take a picture to show you. Edit: Forget about the pics for today, I just broke my camera. |
THey say cause of failure was a something in one rack of FETs or in the brain board caused it to switch incorrectly and melt down the esc..
|
Sorry to hear of another loss. What you are unfortunately going through reminds me of similar times 15yrs. ago when I was dealing w/many novak esc. probs.
