24mm truggy hex adapters? Potential 1/5 build plans...
Ever since I saw the size of the Baja wheels and tires I've wanted to put them on a vehicle and run it on 6s as an ultimate bash rig. I was thinking of using a Savage but I already have a d8t and plenty of extra parts. It's already converted and would be a great candidate. Here's my rough plan:
Baja 5t badlands Stretched wheelbase, shorter than a 5T but longer than truggy 24 mm adapters (where do I find these? Just slip them over the 17mm hexes? might have to get these made by Mike) Some type of body, has to be truck or vw bug style (options?) 6s with Rx8 and Castle 1717 if I can find one Savox or similar high torque servo for steering d8t rear shocks and tower up front for more travel This lets me use 1/8 scale parts and with that comes 1/8 scale strength and simplicity. Don't get me wrong, the Savage is tough, but I hate TVPs and the layout is ridiculous, it's an engineering nightmare for me. The main bash purpose of this rig would be jumping, high speeds on rough terrain, stunts, and just overall fun. What do you guys think? Give me some opinions and your thoughts as well as suggestions! |
I am a firm believer in using 1/8 scale parts to make a larger scale vehicle:

I'm partial to the Muggy/LST2 platform and its strength and durability as you can see by my threads - it has worked very well for me. Keep us posted. |
There was just a thread not too long ago where a guy made a 1/5 SCT out of a stretched D8T. I'll try to find the link. It used two D8T chassis bolted together, looked a little bit hack, but in the video it performed well.

Your best bet is 23mm adapters wrapped in some aluminum tape to take up the .5mm on each side of the hex. Any adapter made for a 1/8 scale truck with an 8mm stub axle like a LST, Cen GST, would work on your truggy. Although you might have to add shims between the hex adapter and the outer bearing of the stub axle, if the drive pin is in a different position or the adapter thickness is different. Minor stuff though.
If I'm not mistaken there is someone making 17mm to 23 or 24mm adapters, I think its Integy. But I would rather not stack hex adapters, more things to go wrong. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...light=d8t+baja The link of above is the thread that Simplechamp mentioned. He stretched his d8t to Baja length though. Personally, I think you're on the right track not going to full Baja length. It makes the truck too long and narrow. But thats my opinion. Keep us posted on your progress. |
Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.
I've seen the doubled up D8T and overall liked what he did. This won't be an immediate project since I have to deal with some other things that are a bit bigger in priority but I still want to try this. |

I don't think those would work, truggies don't use pins.

If you drill a 8mm holet through them for the Truggy/Buggy axle stub then it should work. Also you will need to drill a 2mm(I think) hole for the pin through the side of the hex but by then it is a lot of stuffing around. All 23mm and 24mm wheel hexes I have seen are designed the similar way and none will suit a truggy without a bit of modding.
Wheel hexes are pretty simple to make (well if you have a CNC machine) so why not ask Monster Mile for a hand? He will be able to make them easily enough but all depends what price he can do them for. |
For the cost and the extra work to use those 24mm hexes I would say the 23mm + aluminum tape is definitely the way to go.

Get the cen hexes and wrap them. |
