You definatley don't want the grub screws going into the motor. I would tape the extra holes myself. You are wiswe to be concerned with the sand. It will ruin a motor pretty quick(or bearings or any other moving part!). I seal the wires with silicone, cover the rear bearing with tape and cover the extra holes with tape.
