Received my 9920/8xl and ib3800's today - have a couple of sand running questions -
12.22.2005, 12:57 PM
I received my Bl and new batts today (thanks mike!)
I havnt run it yet, but one thing I am worried about, is on the endbell, where the wires go into the motor, there is quite a bit of open space for junk (mostly worried about sand) to get in.
I ruined a novak ss5800 motor because of sand, and really dont want to toast this one because of the same reason!
I think what happened with my novak, was sand got built up around the extra screw mounting holes, and then once i set it on my workbench, the sand fell inside (sand + motor = very unhappy motor) My original plan for this motor, was to put two cap head screws in the unused holes, and then mount the motor. I know someone on another board did some testing that resulted in having metal washers (head of a cap screw should be the same) between the motor and the mount, showed better cooling, then the motor flush against the mount. The only problem I see with this, is that it wont be as secure as having the flats against each other. I was thinking I could use a grub screw, but then I have a big fear of that grub screw ending up down inside the motor (dosnt seem very likely, worth trying??)
I also noticed the motor dosnt have a flat spot on the shaft. I really dont see how a pinion could grip a round shaft? Is it pretty common to just make your own flat for the grub screw to lock down against?
I am about as excited as a 9 year old who was just given the keys to a monster truck! I cant wait to run this thing!
Thanks in advance guys :)

The flat spot on the motor shaft really isn't necessary, just crank it down with a hex driver and you should be good. As far as an opening on the back of the motor, I usually just cover it up with electrical tape around the wires.
For the front i'm not sure what you should do though. They all seem like reasonable solutions

make sure to cover up the bearing to.

I just cover the bearing with some tape. The hole around the wires could be sealed up with shoe-goo perhaps, but I never worried about this. I don't run my RCs in sand, though.
One of Mikes Heatsink/Motorclamps is highly recomended, too.

I wonder if using a silicione gun could be an idea, obviously making sure not to get it inside the motor.I think it'd be hard to seal it well with tape.Flat head or button head screws would be good for the unused mount holes if you have room,if not maybe a blob of sealant/silicone.
I don't usually put a flat on the shaft either, doesn't usually seem necessary.

I usually dremel a slight flat area on the shaft. Only use the round shaft on trucks without slipper....LOL
j/k, I don't use threadlock on the pinion set screw, but I always put a flatspot in the shaft and check the setscrew frequently.

I cant really decide which route I want to go on the extra mounting holes... I was thinking just putting small peices of electrical tape over the holes, but that will kill a lot of heat transfer between the motor and plate. The button head/cap head screw idea I like, but dont know how secure it would be against the back of my traxxas 3mm motor plate (has the cnc'd cutouts on the back) the grub screw seems like the best option, maybe ill just locktite them in and pray they dont work themselves down in the motor!
I am thinking I like the silicone idea around the wires instead of just tape. I do plan to use tape on the bearing though.
I did want a motor clamp, but mike didnt have the XL's in (in either color) when I ordered, and was even out of the L size too.

If you're not likely to need those extra mounting holes then maybe some thin/slow CA glue would keep them in place better,or red threadlock is fairly permanent, although heat from the motor may undue it.Dremel cutting discs seem good for putting flats on shafts or a good ol' file, definately recommended with a MT.

i would just put some electrically tape over the extra screw holes. or silicon. either would be fine.

I would look at some of the threads about water proofing. If it's water it will be sand proof. ;)

I put some grub screws in the extra holes on my motor with blue thread lock. I let it sit overnight to cure. As far as I know they haven't moved. Should work just fine but, don't hold me responsible if it doesn't. :)

I had just put the grub screws in (no locktite, just bare) and then started to dremel a flat spot on the motor shaft. Once I was done I noticed one of the grub screws moved WAY down in the hole! I put a good dose of blue locktite on, so hopefully it does the job.

You definatley don't want the grub screws going into the motor. I would tape the extra holes myself. You are wiswe to be concerned with the sand. It will ruin a motor pretty quick(or bearings or any other moving part!). I seal the wires with silicone, cover the rear bearing with tape and cover the extra holes with tape.
