Angry My MGM 16018 catch in fire! - 08.24.2008, 05:59 PM

Play with my e-revo for an hour or more this week-end without any problem.
Today, i've plug the pack and give it a little run, and in about 3 second after niail the trottle, ........... Poufffffff!!!! some white smoke around the revo. So i remove the body to see a beautifull and big, big flame on the controller
I've un-plug the li-po to save it from the fire.

The negatif input lead have boke inside of the board and short on the input capacitor.

I hope that my 2 li-po pack are correct, i've not try to recharge it.

So i nead a new controller. Maybe a MMM or another MGM i don't know.

A smoked mgm is quite rare, can you tell us exactly what set up you were running? How long have you had it? Also look into getting your 160.18 repaired cause that might be cheaper than buying that new esc which could fail real quick.

Smoked MGMs arent that rare, seen a few recently in truth.

Seems like the on-board data recorder on someones 16018 was reading a continuos current of ~150 amps, and spikes of over 300amps, with a neu 1515 1y or 1.5d. Somewhat startling really.

David, sorry about your MGM. I bought one from Mike ( same as yours) a month or so ago and have run it a few times w/out issues...hopefully it will continue. I run mine w/a 4s and 1512 1YF, if it makes any difference.

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

IMO there is a lot of jarring going on with off road trucks especially with speeds approaching 50 mph and all it takes is a loose connection to cause a short.....both the MMM and MGM controllers are good...I dont think buying one brand over another will keep that from happenning in the future. I do like to make mounts that have foam and/or female velcro to help absorb the shock

Before you buy a new esc call mike and ask him directly what you should buy for maximum reliability and heck you may want to even ask him what he runs.

I think I remember reading that Mike runs MGMs, but don't take my word for it.

I don't think it's that rare. I smoked my 16018 in pretty much the same fashion. It worked great for several runs, and then released the smoke on plugging in the battery the next day. Strange. It worked for a while after that only on external BEC or RX pack, and then it shot some little flames when the fets went up.

Sorry to hear about your loss David..

For what it's worth, I've got (5) MGM now, two run great, one has no brakes at high speeds and two are out for software upgrades. MGM, MMM, ETC they are all the same, every time we plug them in, we takes the risk..

Still that sucks sir sorry, if you haven’t already, just send it in to MGM, you should have another one in about 4-6 weeks..

Nothing!.. Hahahahaaa..

Not sure if MGM will send me a new unit for free
My setup was e-revo, with RCM hybriyd diff (buggy ratio) geared 62/22, on 6s li-po

I've run about 5 hour with this setup before the controller catch in fire.

Don,t know the reason

6s lipo is presumably 6 cell which at 3.7 volts per cell equates to 22.2 volts, the 16018 is rated as per model number suggests at 18 volts so your running it over it's limit. I was going to go with the 16018 until I realised that it would restrict me 4/5s so I ordered the 16025.
This may not have been your problem but I wouldn't rule it out.

Losi 8T RR - Novarossi Plus 21-5BT/ Jammin JP3 - Teknorc 8T - Neu 1515-1Y - MGM 16025-3 Z Series ESC.
