Looking for a fan setup.... -

I am running an Align 600XL in my E-Maxx, and was looking for a fan setup for it. It runs about 150, and according to some members here, that's normal for that motor, however, I would like to try to do some kind of fan setup on it.
I was wondering if a dual 30mm fan setup would work.
But how could I mount them? I was thinking something like 3 pieces of lexan with the motor curve cut into them, and then mount 3 more small pieces on top of those with some holes drilled in them to attach the fans with.
But if I did that, how far above the motors should the fans be? 1/4 inch or so?

If the motor is normal in diameter, say about 36-39mm, then you can get heatinks that will clip on, with a fan pre-attached. Long zip-ties would also work. As for distance, about 1/4"- 1/2" is fine, its not critical in that sense, so long as there is a little bit of a gap to allow air to dissipate underneath the fan.

just make an L braket so the fan kinda hangs over the motor

Yeah, I just though of using some sheet metal with holes drilled in it for the fans, and kind of have the end rest on the motor.

Wow, fat motor...
If you used a thin sheet of metal, you could mount that in between the motor and motor mount, and have it hang back over the motor, then mount you fans onto that- cut a couple 30mm round holes in it so the air can pass through ofcourse.

You can go with a single fan like a 40mm and they are easy to bolt pretty much anywhere. I tossed one on my chinese motor (which has since been replaced by a neu) and that lowered my temps by about 30 deg or more...I went from 185 to 150deg then added a neu motor which dropped my temps all the way down to 110deg...here's some pics of it good luck. http://s283.photobucket.com/albums/k...riedfatnhorny/

Im going the liquid cooled route myself- got a small pump, got some silicon hose and a cooling jacket coming, just need to fab up yet another motor mount so that I have mounting points. More for fun than anything- something to play with until the 70mm medusa arrive.

Ive mentioned water cooling here before and had negetive reactions guy's were saying that those systems were just a gimmick but I disagreed. Have you seen that kick ass one by tcs cooling? Thats pretty much the nicest one Ive ever seen, I do have the manifold part that goes between the motor and the mount (I was gonna put it on my boat but decided I didnt need it). I might toss it on ebay in the electric boat section. Anyway the gayest one I ever saw was the finedesign version...the pump is HUGE and looks like something hacked off the back of a fishtank and the radiator is one of those old brass fuel cells from the 1950's ...lol then it uses a brass tube coil for the motor (barely any contact) and comes with a seperate 1s battery pack to run it all. Heavy ugly and loud! They claim a 40-50deg drop in temps....my single fan does almost that good 30-35deg.

I wouldnt run it as a normal setup, just seeing what difference it can make to a hot running feifao type motor- My setup is gonna cost about $35-40, which is cheap compared to the TCS setup, but the TCS is uber cool looking yeah- just those little pumps cost about $80- mine is about the size of a 380 S can motor, so I can mount it up without much hassle- the reservoir/radiator will go where a second motor normally does on the 3906 tranny, and the pump will be located somewhere safe- all conected with silicon hose and ran from a 9v battery.
The FD setups are laughable yeah- no doubt they make good boats, but their car/truck conversions are very poor compared to even kershawdesigns stuff. Let me know if you put the TCS manifold up for sale, or better still, where did you get it from by itself, as the TCS website doesnt sell it on its own. Not sure I need or want it, but its so cool...

The Align motors have a fan built in. However it only helps if the motor is running  . In a heli that isn't a problem, but for us car/truck guys who aren't constantly moving the fan doesn't help much. I don't think a liquid cooling system will help enough to justify the extra weight because the windings are internal. They have no direct contact with the can, and the rotor is in the way, too. Mounting a fan or two so that they blow into the slots in the side of the can would be best, IMO. Or if possible rig a fan to blow into the front of the motor through the motor mount.

Wish I had the know-how to fab up some kind of good liquid cooling system. That would be really neat. Be sure to get some pics post when you do get a liquid cooling system setup.
