BEC and Shorting Question.. - 09.06.2010, 10:34 PM

So, earlier today, I flipped, no biggie. No body, but I believe I pulled the RX wires out of the BEC.

These:

So, I found it, the signal wire was completely off the BEC, the pos and neg wires were starting to lift off, strands may have been touching each other.

I got magic smoke on my fans (fan on ESC, and motor, yeah yeah BrianG..), my servo, but not the ESC.. Not that I know of.

So my question...
Would the fans and servo shortage and smokage be caused from the BEC short?
If I were to reuse the BEC, and it shorted again, what, if anything, would short out?
RX?

Thanks!

If you output of the BEC shorted (red to brown wire), it should have activated the overcurrent protection and shut the BEC down. If the signal wire (orange) shorted against something else (like the red or brown), I don't know. That's used to program the BEC so I'm not sure what effect it has, if anything.

However, since it took out your fans, I wonder if it output full battery voltage instead? I would check the output with a volt meter if I were you, and really, if it did/does have full battery voltage, I would NOT use it again; next time it could be your receiver, servos, etc that get blown.

Well, it sure did smoke out the servo, must've been the orange against something else?

Yeah, I'm pulling it and tossing in a new one if I can find a newer one for cheap..

Thanks!

The BEC is likely toast. Contact CC.

I kinda doubt it had anything to do with the orange signal wire honestly. I think the BEC just fried and made it look like maybe the orange wire had something to do with it. If anything, shorting of the red and brown wire would be more suspect...

If the servo blew, you might want to look into getting a replacement servo driver board. It's cheaper than a whole new servo. I blew a ~$90 servo a while back (similar BEC issue) and the driver board was only $26...

Hm, I completely didn't expect CC to repair BEC's..
And it's $6!
Time to cancel my eBay order...
If a non-warranty repair, if it's been soldered on, is it the same thing?
Hm...

It was a super cheap servo, so it's all good.
Hextronik HX12k, about $7 on HobbyCity, but I got a deal on an Airtronics 94358 for $40 shipped.

Usually, soldering only voids the warranty if it is done on the PCB. Soldering the ends of the wires should not void the warranty, but it won't hurt to ask them.

Well I'm positive it's out of warranty, and I did solder the PCB, err?
