is something wrong -
11.04.2007, 11:31 PM
well my maxx is due to run its first run near the end of the week the motor last item is coming in then. i got the batts today, two 6400 true rcs toped them off with a charge, decided to program my quark so plugged in batteries with controller off to my quark (2 in a series with tower connector) and as soon as i plugged the batts in my quark made a puff sound and puffed a puff of smoke. so i plug in the other battery and try to program it. i went through the process of programing it and it light up only red at first but twards the end i got the whole rainbow of colors, but i did not hear the beep it said in the Manuel, but i did not watch the beeps to see if they where the pattern insisted in the Manuel, also i realized i had the ESC plugged into the wrong slot on the receiver and moved it after it puffed, i was running a Rx pack with a cut red wire on the ESC and spektrum. i will have more info tomorrow. just thought i would see what you guys thought.

You should have it connected to the motor when you program it...Thats your problem...Not to mention the motor is what beeps, not the controller...

The esc uses the motor to make the beeping noises so without the motor plugged in you will not here a beep. My quark manual said program with the motor disconnected and listen for a beep. How stupid. Some of the Align manuals I think say something similar.
As for the esc going puff, that's not good. I'd be sending it back or getting in touch with quark.
edit: damn you squeeforever for beating me.

If you seen smoke come out, that was the smoke signal from an electronic component going bye-bye.
It has a problem I would say. If it's fairly new, you might get some warranty work to make it good as new. It will have to be sent in though.

What does it do when you plug it up now?
Which model is it?
Ok, so it has some use on it. If it doesn't work, I would open up the case and take a look around the boards inside. If you have something fried, it's usually pretty easy to spot.

ok here is the update today. opend the quark (125B)up today, looked at the board, looks clean as whistle nothing brown, black burnt, and so forth, i used a flashlight to look at the ends of the capacitors(i think that is what they are called) and no damage there. when i turn it on it has a red light and it seems to flash and if i try to program it it seems to work i think i just cant hear the beeps becuase no motor is present. is it safe for me to try to start it up and reprogram it today. also could possibly one of the motor wires touched to make the puff of smoke, (btw it smelled werid but not like burnt esc at all like i have smelled before). also has the heat mod done to it.

If the motor wires were touching when you turned it on before, that could have been the source of the puff, smoke. The Quark toggles the power to the motor when you power up. This is where the jingle sound comes from that you hear normally.
By all means, try it with a motor attached. It's the only way you're gonna be able to program it anyways. An ultra safe way to do this, if you're unsure is to remove the motor pinion to prevent any unwanted movement.
Good Luck! I hope it works out for you. I think your chances are VERY good.

I think what they mean is disconnected from the drive train, other wise you might have a runaway
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

Well, if I suspected a possible bad esc, I'd put a temporary 10-15A fuse inline with the battery power. This is plenty to program the ESC and beep the motor, but will pop if the ESC is bad and is dumping power to a motor coil (which would pull LOTS of current). If everything programs fine, pull the fuse out and try it in the vehicle watching temps on everything. If there is any hint of improper operation, remove battery power fast.
