The esc uses the motor to make the beeping noises so without the motor plugged in you will not here a beep. My quark manual said program with the motor disconnected and listen for a beep. How stupid. Some of the Align manuals I think say something similar.

As for the esc going puff, that's not good. I'd be sending it back or getting in touch with quark.
