Ax10 Based crawler project

So I have about finished gathering parts for my 2.2 crawler build. Going to use ax10 axles, pede tranny, sidewinder, and an outrunner.

Have the axles and the tranny built. Chassis will be based on the gatekeeper design. I will use revo pushrods for the links, and traxxas xl shocks, most likely with losi truck springs. Chassis material will be kydex, and I have some axial stand-offs to use with that. I have the gatekeeper lower skid for the pede tranny.

Plan to run a 833kv outrunner I have on 3s lipo with the sidewinder. I have a jr ds8711 servo and will feed it with a ccbec, as the sidewinder bec is a bit weak.

Due to the 5mm shaft, I will be using 32p gearing. I have a friend with an ax10 that runs a novak 55t motor on 3s, and with stock gearing it does about 5mph, so has decent wheel speed. 60/18 gearing with the 833kv motor on 3s will give me similar speed, and hopefully more torque than a brushed motor.

I may step up to 4s lipo, and gear it down more. Depends on how well it starts with the current gearing. I basically do not want any cogging. Any ideas what esc settings I should run? I am guessing high timing and high start power, as it is an outrunner? No punch control, of course, and quite a bit of drag brake.

I will have some pics of the parts tomorrow, and hopefully I will have time to cut the sideplates and servo mounts.

Why not use an Axial tranny? The size and fact that they're already locked makes them much more desirable than a pede tranny IMO.

I have to claim cheapness as my main reason. I already have the pede tranny, so it is $0 vs $40 for the axial. I also have the skidplate too, so it is $0 vs $20 for that. And I have the materials and template to make the side plates and servo mounts so it is $0 vs $100 for the kit (which would include the skid, but you get the point). I also have all of the electronics, so it has cost about $150 to get the axles and the other various parts I did not have. So it was pretty cheap to do this build...

Makes sense. If you need any other parts for it, let me know. I have a bunch of Axial parts at the house.

70mm from center eye to center eye on the ends? Or a 70mm tube? I have some of the stock cross tubes and stock upper link tube from an ARTR thst should be real close to 70mm with a Traxxas rod end on them.

And the moment that you have all been waiting for...

My custom cut chassis side plates and upperlink/servo mounts, plus pics of the other large assemblies:















I was going to use a 1/4 scale servo, but it was a bit too wide to fit with the long upper links. I will trim the side of the pede trans when I get the smaller pinion.

Some finished pics. I love the tiny tlt body! Somehow I forgot to order a body for this truck, but the tlt body looks so funny I may leave it for a while...













Gave it a good test run last night and it performed quite well. Lower gearing would be nice, I have some smaller 5mm bore 32p pinions coming. I need longer springs, I am currently using losi 10th buggy rear springs, and need to get some losi 10th truck rear springs. My ground clearance needs to be about 1/4" higher and it should be about right. Otherwise all of the equipment ran great, no heat to speak of. My steering servo would cut out for a few seconds sometimes. Not sure why, but I may swap in a bigger jr 8711 and see how that does.

Seems like a success, the badlands tires are really good, even with the stock foams. I did narrow the foams a bit, cut off about 1/4 of the total width. The tires seemed too fat with the stock width foam on the narrow proline wheels.

Stepped down to a 16 tooth pinion from the 18t that I had. Much better low speed driveability. I cannot make the esc cog or glitch, even rolling backwards down a slope it will stop and run forwards with the smallest throttle input. CC did a great job with the sidewinder, excellent speed control for 2.2 and an outrunner.

I call it the J-Keeper chassis. All of the link geometry is the same and the skid is off Erik's crawler. I bought the axial skid for him, his gc1 has an ax10 tranny now...

Just need some xxx-t rear springs, the ones I have are a bit short, and are too firm with a preload spacer to get the correct ride height. A longer shock end would help with the ride height, but 8 bucks worth of springs is easier...
