Savage XL Brushless project - 10.28.2010, 04:41 AM

Hi everybody !

Here's my Savage XL project :

Kits of conversion:

The kit hobby pro.

The direct drive KD the best kit but I am septic as for the quality of pignon gears and the price is higher than the other kits.

The KD's motor mount (in that case i'll change the pignon gears of the gearbox which has 3 reports on my XL)

The integy's motor mount. (In what countered it is poor quality to verify in that case i'll also change the pignon gears of the XL's gearbox)

Engines:

Castle creations: 1800, 1600, 1580 ( 1717 ), 2200 (max 6s each) .C' is there that I really need your help because I know only the 2200 Kv, the others I do not know if it would be advisable in my XL.

Xerun: 2000kv (max 6s).

There would be also a certaint KD9123 thingummyjig thing finally I invented the numbers after KD but it is something the kind. His would be $30

Contros:

Xerun 150a or Castle Creations MMM V3.

Thanks to all, rcBOB.

i would get the MMM esc and the 1518 1y 1800kv or the 1520 1600kv they will run cooler than the 2200kv in the xl and for $65 u cant go wrong!

Hello, sorry for my poor english

Ok thank you for replies !

What do you think about the 1580Kv (1717) ?

And what are the differences between the 1600 Kv and the 1800 Kv (1518) ?

Which is the best for my XL ?

Get both for the price of 1! Then try them both and see which work better. If you are running larger, heavier tires, then the 1600 is probably better but it also means you need to either gear up more or run higher voltages (i.e. 5->6S) to get the same top speed as the 2200kv. 1800 a bit less so.

I would get the biggest motor possible, either the 1520 or the 1717 and run them on 5 or 6s. (6S preferrably.) The 2200kv 1515 size and the 1518 work well too, but for the price I would get the strongest and most rubust motor to start with.

KD products are not of particularly high quality IMO after owning a few. I can't see the plastic gears of the direct drive kit holding up to too much power. I would either keep the tranny and use the HD gears as neccessary, or just go to a center diff setup.

I prefer take a 2000Kv (xerun) and a 1600Kv to test them instead of a 1600Kv and a 1800Kv

Ok, thanks Finnster

So you say that i should buy the biggest motor possible but i hesitate between the 1717 and the 1520.

I used HD gears in the gear box of my savage flux and they are not really resistants...

Also i will run in 6s or 4s it will depends.

I don't like plastic gear in the KD's direct drive at all (as you Finnster).

Hi everybody ! I'm now the owner of a brand new 1717 motor !

So, i'm going to buy the kershaw's direct drive for my savage xl but i don't know which pinion to choose...

I've seen the gear ratios on kershaw's website but they're made for Castle creations 41,8mm diameter motors and i've got a 50mm diameter motor !

As you can see i don't konw what to do...

Does anyone can help me please ?

Thanks.

The 41.8 vs 50mm diameter maters not at all. You need to go to the script asylum (http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/top_speed.html) and plug in the variables (diff ratio, direct drive ratio, spur size, tire diameter, battery type, etc) and play with different pinions to get to approx. the speed you want.

Thank you thzero, i tried the speed calculator but there is a problem :

the mph increase as i increase the number of teeth of the pinion (motor).

Is that a bug ??

And also i can't choose the different types of data because there's not a case in which it's written "Savage XL", there's just E-Savage, Savage Flux or Savage X but not Savage XL at all...

Um, no. The more teeth you add to the pinion, the higher the gear ratio (numerically its lower), and the higher the gear ratio the faster you go.

Ok,

i thought buy a 13t pinion and take it with my 52t spur (which comes from my Sav' XL) but the speed calculator told me that my sav' will go at approximately 25 mph with this configuration ! I would rather my savage to go to a high speed, 60-65 mph for example...
Do you think that i should buy a pinion wich contains more teeth to go faster or do you think that the data wich that i wrote are wrong and so the speed is wrong too ?? (because they weren't any Savage XL case in the speed calculator ?)

Sorry for all this questions and thank you for your replies.

As I said, a pinion with a higher tooth count will lower the gear ratio, which will increase the speed of the vehicle.

Savage Flux out of the box runs a 44/20 spur/pinion which is a 2.2 ratio as compared to your proposed 52/13 which is a 4.0 ratio. So yes, 25mph is probably correct. Rough equivalent of that is a 52/25. However, the Flux is running a 2200kv motor as compared to the 1580kV you are trying to use so you need to lower your gear ratio more, which will be hard to do with a 52t spur due to lack of bigger pinions, and/or use more than 4 cells. You can also toss in the high-speed idler for the tranny which will lower the gear ratio too.

You are going to need at least 6S, maybe more, to get that type of speed with the 1717. I would shoot for 40-45mph to start with.

You would need to give some specifics in order to help further, i.e.
Battery configuration
Tire type
Gear ratio of the KD direct drive
Savage nitro or bulletproof diffs (assuming nitro)
