the foil like material on lipos - 09.17.2008, 03:50 PM

if i barley press on the foil like material on my zippy with my finger nail it will dent. is there any protection between that and the actually battery material. i have 1 inch wide velcro straps that seem to dent it as well, when i crash. i really dont want to blow up my first 105 buck pack and melt my revo, unless i get it on tape

The foils is basically the cell. You dont want to tear that. Denting it is not really good either. When you dent the pack it creates a little spot on the pack that can cause a small fault inside the pack and it creates a small little hot spot so to speak. You should avioud denting it if you can.

That said... I have a nuumber of pretyy old pretty beat up packs that havent blown up or anything, I dont think those little dent s you showed in your picture are going to cause a meltdown, but beating a pack up to much will likey reduce it lifespan.

I like to put an extra layer of shrik wrap over may packs for 2 reasons. A little extra protection for the cells is one, and then when the shrink starts to look beat up and worn and torn (which it eventually does) I can take it off and put a new layer on it. It keeps the original manufacturers wrap in better condition.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

I would suggest wrapping it in re-inforced tape, then adding an extra layer of thick shrink wrap.

Duct tape? Get the camo kind, that way the sticks and other sharp objects cannot see the lipo and therefore cannot dmamge it

You definately want some more protection on that cell. One or more layers of shrink would be suggested.

ok so i should just reinforce the original shrink wrap with more tape and shrink wrap. what is the thickest shrink wrap.
should i try a rubber mat like material or just try and make a case for it?
what do you guys do for a case this is my first lipo and i never realized how fragile it was, seems like driving with a water balloon for power ready to pop

If you want to make a case you can, maxamps sell some sort of lexan case that should fit the zippy, and they are not too bad. I usually make my own battery trays, and make the walls high enough to protect the lipo. You can get really thing shrink if you look around, I found some on ebay once.

Sikeston34m had some decent shrink at one point, give him a yell!

Maxamps.com has it, Truerc.com has it.

For you Eli, I got some really nice thick stuff from Al's Hobbies that is perfect for those Zippy packs of yours. Its yellow, but who cares about the color.

I started wrapping mine in electrical tape after I damaged some of the shrink wrap. Works great.
