1:8th buggy wheels (17mm hex) -
11.19.2008, 06:38 AM
Hi folks, I'm looking for some funky rims for my on road buggy, I run medial pro tarmac II tyres which come on horrible yellow wheels, which was just about acceptable for the awesomeness of the tyres when I was running the stock buggy body, but now I have a cool body I want cool rims too, I am after something with at least 5 spokes preferably more and either black or silver (yes I mean silver not chrome) although black spokes and chrome rims would be quite cool.
The best I have found are black ofna 5 spokes, I got a set and put proline road rages on them and was utterly disappointed with the tyres, the wheels are OK and if no body can suggest anything else I will rip the proline marshmallows off and put the medial pro tarmac IIs on them, but I'm sure there are funkier rims out there for those that know where to look.
Excellent tyres, nasty wheels
Quite nice wheels, vomit inducing lumps of blancmange masquerading as tyres

Guys on the Kyosho Inferno GT forum are running Ipanema tires. I haven't tried a set myself but they seem to have some good reviews. Not sure if there is a distributor in the UK though.
Nice car by the way - what is it?

Have you looked at the entire selection of ofna rims? They also have some tires that will suit your needs.

Thanks rootar, I like the look of those advantage multispoke wheels and the price is very good too.
speedybl, I've been thorough the ofna list and they have some great styles but not in black or silver, and strangely they don't show the hyper7 wheels that I have in black any more, maybe they have stopped making black wheels and just have stock left in a few styles.
I like the hockenheim style ofna v spoke better than the advantage multispoke but they have chrome not silver and grey not black
I love the oz f1 style ofna star spoke but they are only available in yellow or grey
Has anyone seen black versions of these hanging around in ther local model shop? Or know of another manufacturer that makes a similar style in silver or black?
I am VERY happy with the Medial Pro Tarmac IIs they have good grip and they don't use foams, they have a honeycomb of rubber supports inside the tread that glues flat to the wheel to ensure that the tyre doesn't squirm under loading or balloon, it feels firm like a solid block of rubber and yet they are very light, it made such a huge difference in handling when I switched to them from the road rages which I could see moving almost an inch from overhanging one side of the rim to the other when I went from a left turn to a hard right and visa versa, so I am reluctant to use anything else, however those ofna Vtreads that you have on the buggy in your avatar look like they are much lower in profile than the road rages so maybe if they have much thicker sidewalls and firmer foams they wouldn't be too bad and the Tarmac IIs are hard to find unmounted, how are you finding them? I see they come in banded or unbanded, are the bands thick enough to stop ballooning with BL or are you better off getting the unbanded ones and taping them?
The buggy is a Hot Bodies Lightning 2 Pro, hence the paint scheme and the body is a Mantua Models Ford Focus, do you not have the focus in the states?

We don't seem to have Rit over here, there is a commonly found dye called dylon, I thought that may be the same stuff under a different name and bought a set of white Hockenheim style wheels to dye black but it didn't really take at all, I don't know if dylon wont work or if the wheels are made out of a non-porous plastic, I'll post some pics of the results after work.

Does Rit work on all wheels? if not has anyone tried it on the ofna wheels? I found a skate shop that sells it.
Here is a picture of the wheels I boiled for about 45 mins in black Dylon, the spokes and very edges of the rims look slightly sooty, I since read on the Dylon website that despite the similar sounding name, Dylon wont work on nylon or most other synthetics.

Rit will work on ant plastic or nylon wheel. to get "black" takes time and patience though. you will want to boil water, remove form heat, add rit dye, throw the wheels into the dye mixture for about 45 minutes, and repeat the process, otherwise you end up with a washed out purple color.
Black is te only color that requires a double dip and 45 mins each time. other colors take much better.
