Rampage TT5 vs XB: Which is tougher? - 08.22.2011, 06:21 PM

Hey all you 1/5 Rampage owners,

Which model has the stronger/more durable components and parts? The TT5 V4 or the new XB models? I am looking at which chassis to start with as foundation for a conversion (the way i want) and want one that will really hold up to abuse. Thanks.

Well Ryan, the Rampaja i got from ya certainly holds up better than the Baja i have and puts the power down better. The truck is never the weak point, it is alway the non-mechanical bits that fail. I still run it without brakes and haven't broke it.

Right on. Thanks Jayson. Have you had any experience with the new Rampage XBE? If so, how has it held up?

Although i havent used one of the XBs they just dont look beefy enough to me. The suspension arms and bumpers just look sorta thin to hold up to much punishment. As for the XB-E would ok i believe, if you could upgrade the electronics to atleast an 8s setup and go to a 1527 motor, but the xb-e has 100mm clearance for motor length and the 1527 is 101mm long. The stock xbe has roughly the same power output as my 8th scale buggy.

From what I've seen and read, the xbe does very well with a castle/neu 1717 or 1520, a MMM and and 6s. Even better with MMXL and 8s.

I have the cars that I really wanted before I got them ;-)

Im running an XB-E with the stock HW150a esc, CC1717, 7075RC motor mount w/48t spur and 10t pinion on just 6s. I am very pleased with the durability, speed and power of the setup. Sure, its not crazy backflip power, 90mph top speed or anything too extreme, it just works. The power is greater than any gasoline car I have ever ran, and I have had some seriously high dollar power plants mind you. At the Powerjam at LargescaleRC it was the fastest car there, nothing was even close. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to race with the gassers but I was allowed to run the qualifying heats with them. The announcer was begging anyone there to bring something to challenge it.
I've had the car since Febuary, and running countless hours on the car, I have yet to break anything major. I stripped a wheel after I forgot to double check all the wheel nuts. I broke the wing on a BAD rollover in 35 degree weather. I toasted an ESC at Powerjam after they over watered the track in between heats. I broke a outer hinge pin after a bad landing at Powerjam. All the suspension, driveline and chassis components are still in A+ condition. I absolutely love this car, its been nothing short of amazing for me.

Do you think the drive trane will hold up to a Castle 2028 and MambaXL on 8S. If I get an XB-E....that is what I will run....I will sell the Hobby Wing stuff. Thoughts?

Oh, and one more question...are the lipos that come with it of decent quality?

The2028 won't fit in the XBE. No need for it anyway, as the car isn't nearly as heavy as the other 1/5 gassers out there. It's far more nimble though. The lipo packs that come with it are better off in some 1/10 scale car maybe. They aren't much use in the XBE, especially when you upgrade to a better motor. The ESC seems fine though. I'm running a CC1520 and haven't had any problems with the stock esc yet.

DISCLAIMER: I am totally high on painkillers from having a busted up knee. That coupled with the fact that I just woke up from a 4 hour nap may make my posts rather reatrded sounding. You have been warned :D

Killa is right the 2028 will not fit, its too long and too fat (thats what she said right?) About the largest diameter motor that will fit into the stock XB-E is the CC1717. So basically about 48mm diameter and 100mm in length is about all you can squeeze into the stock setup. There is a guy that makes aftermarket accessories for the XB-E, he has a motor mount that will allow the 5692 to be dropped it. It is a bit pricey, but so far mine is holding up fine with the delrin Spur.
I have some video of the XB-E with CC1717, stock batteries (which could handle the amp load just fine but were too low MAH to get a decent runtime) on 6s and the stock ESC. Shot on my phone so the quality isn't the greatest. I was doing to recording and driving, so my driving or the action wasn't the best.

Kershaw Designs makes a mount for the 2028 for the XB-E and even sells rollers with the mount installed. Only reason I asked is because I have experience with a 2028 in my Baja 5t...It hauls.... 55mph and wheelies anytime you want em! Still curious if you think the drive line will survive the 2028. Thanks. I just re-read your "too fat" comment....that is funny stuff! haha.

Ive seen those but from what Ive seen of his previous stuff I would have to pass on whatever he came up with. The drive line should be able to handle the 2028, well except the tires :D

I don't like ripping on people and the guy comes up with some pretty cool ideas, but his excecution needs work. He only uses flat stock that is cut on a water jet, limiting how he can design and assemble parts and the aluminum isn't the greatest quality stuff either. I've seen his baja conversion and other stuff up close in person, and these are my opinions of it. The other mount that obeast44 is talking about looks alot better than the kershaw one

Edit: he is the only person I've seen selling rollers of the XB-E though, and that part is tempting

Seeing as this (links below) just came out i think i am going to go this route. Its losi, so it will be tuff, and there will be huge parts availability and after market hop-ups too. The only bad thing is that is a RTR and i would prefer a kit as i dont need the servos, gas motor, or radio. I am guessing they might release a kit form in 6 months or so. They do already have hop-up parts available. And the chassis layout will be super easy for a nice conversion. Looks like it could fit a Castle 2028 motor no problem. The dimensions look real nice.

Thatd be very interesting for sure! I assume the 2028 will be placed where the fuel tank is and the batteries out back? Keep us posted :)
