Direct Drive MT2

Direct Drive MT2 - 12.25.2007, 02:37 PM

I finally converted my MT2 to direct drive system.

The motor is an outrunner 1050Kv, 175gr, 5mm shaft and the ESc a MM.
It works great with two 3S 2500mA lipos or 4S A123.

CVDs are T-maxx MIPs for 5mm shafts.

i still dont really understand why eevryone is doing direct drive?


what are the advantages?

Well, it removes the tranny and gives more chassis space. It is simpler, so there is less to break. Only have the diff gears to worry about. And it appears that the outrunners are much more effecient per dollar than other motors. I am sure that there are more advantages!

VWT4, what settings do you have on the mm to get it to startup well? I have heard that the mm does not like outrunners?

Yes, it removes total weight and a more important thing: the tranny that is rotating mass.

The best configuration for outrunners in my opinion is start power high and timing highest. A high timing is very important for more than 2 poles motors and the MT Dragon is a 12 poler.

Tomorrow I will try the motor with a Quark 125 and a Schulze 18.149.

That is a very nice & clean layout- so much more room as stated. Be sure to get some more pics and vids up - have you given it a test run yet?

ya i knew it would reduce weight and all but are the outrunners just as fast as lets say a neu? can you buy expensive outrunners?

The speed depends of the motor kv, voltaje used and the final ratio.

The motors used for direct drive are low kv because the gear ratio is lowered when the pinion, spur and tranny are removed. So you need less motor turns to get the same wheels turns than with the classic setup.

IMO a good motor should be efficient and durable , and is very important to choose the correct model for each application (KV, weight, rotor lenght and diameter, number of poles, A, ..).

BTW Neu are awesome motors but expensive, like the Plettenbergs.I think both are 6 polers (Bigmaxximum sure is) and more efficients than 2 polers, but requires much more work from the ESC. The MT Dragon is only US$35 and I'm not sure about the durability because the quality of the materials.

Wow, very nice conversion!

If you got the MM to work well enough, you're going to love the Quark. I didn't have much luck with the MM.

When you install the Quark, set it to "outrunner", starting power high. In the battery section of the setup, either go with Lipoly High, or manual setup, then put the cell cutout to 3.0 volts or so.

Good to see another "direct drive to diff" (sikeston34m's terminology) MT2. Did you start with the 18SS kit like I did? I'm also glad to see you have the aluminum diff housings, they're a must!

Thanks sikeston34m. Today I tested the Schulze with a hard timing program and works great with zero cogging and very progressive, much better than the MM.

I will test tomorrow the Quark with the setup you recommended.

Yes, the basis is a MT2 18SS. The alu diffs housing work great!
