Cool XRay 808 Starting Setup - 06.16.2008, 11:39 PM

I was going to post this in another thread, but I thought it would be too buried. I felt hat the 808 is setup out of the box good for Euro tracks, but not US style so much. So far, every where I have run this setup, it is almost dialed. All I have really adjusted is the ride height depending on track conditions and the rear diff to 1k. Otherwise it is dialed

Oh yea, the 5 hole rear shock piston is achieved by drilling out one of the holes and putting in a small set screw to plug it. Just make sure you do not let the screw protrude from the bottom of the piston.

Cool....

Thanks John... That helps a lot!..

You lost me on the 5 hole piston, why would you drill a hole open and then close it up?? That must be a Euro "thing"??

Have a great one..

Shaun.

Nothing!.. Hahahahaaa..

Actually not a Euro thing. As it was explained to me, with the thin oil you will get the "pillow-like" movement that allows the rear shocks to work those bumps. With the one hole blocked, the shocks will pack on the landings making it a little more firm and not just slamming the rear down. I have tried it both ways and it works. My one friend is running his as just stock 1.3 pistons and I think his rear is a little too soft.

OK... You talked me into it. I am going to try Roco's setup. I have been thinking about it for a while now, but was hesitant to change a bunch of stuff all at once. I have been adjusting it all over the place from the base setup and think I have it oretty darn good, but still am feeling like it could use a more dampning landing jumps. Your comment on the 5 hole is what convinced me. I have tried harder spings and thicker shock oil, but then I am giving up to much ability to handle the bumpy section of the straight.

I'll let you know what I think. I am going to make these setup changes this week, and unfortumntly the first chance I will have to test it will be this weekend at the Midwest Nitrocross so I guess I find out how I like it reall fast. lol But, I have read a few others saying the same thing about this setup. I just wasnt sure if it would translate to a brushless setup well so I was a bit hesitant to try it.

Your endorsement on a brushless setup has convinced me. I'll add my comments after getting to try it out.

One thing I found with my 777 conversion (which was my first), the nitro setups work and feel the same...to me at least. I also think the Losi guys say they use the same setups as nitro and have no problem.

I should have kept my truggy so I could have seen how they feel converted to e-power. I felt compelled to sell it to a local kid to keep him interested in the hobby. He had such worn out junk it was way past laughable

I drove a converted 808 with the factory setup last week - it definately was too soft for my local track IMO.

Mike,

What is your local track conditions? How have you felt the setups differ from nitro to electic? When I first converted my 777 I had really thick oil based on what I read it I really didn't need it. I went back to the nitro setups and the buggy felt so much better. I always like to hear what other people think, especially one like you who is at the forefront of this "craze".

When will your official 808 conversion be finished. I would love to have the proper height mount instead of using the old buggies mount.

Yep... Still running it with a few mminor tweeks. It really plants the rear end compared to the stock setup.

I have been running a new setup that I tried compared Rocco's. Too many changes to list here, but my brief run was encouraging. I need to really thrash it in a main before I can comment. Last race I blew the rear diff out. For some reason it just leaked, so I had to get a new cup, o-rings and paper gasket. If I like the setup I will post it up.

I just bought a used XT8 and I am on the fence if I should move the electric into it or keep it nitro for now. I wish I could afford an electric setup for all my cars, lol!

what are yall liking for front shock oil and pistons? ive already got the 808 rear bigbores setup like i want on them but im still playing with the regular 8xb fronts and was wondering what every one is using for the 808 fronts so ill have something to start off of when they get here to replace these regular shocks.

thanks
