HOW HIGH are mikes' trays? - please post pics! - 08.14.2008, 01:44 AM

hey there.

i got a 1512 2d/s

planned on running on a123...

pitty because ive realised that lipo have clear advantages (apart from being as strong/fast charge times! (20A FTW))

anyway, i had planned on running 4s2p and that was slow... and the voltage dropped alot when i drew 104A + (wattmeter on measures up to 100A) went to 10.02v.

so the next plan was to run 2 more cells in parallel to make 5s2p. i have realised that fitting this in a small buggy is near impossible not to mention the weight (700g + tabs, wires, bullets and taps, 750g?)

anyway, im looking to buy a zippy (or equivilant $100 pack)

2 options. 4s 4800 25-35

or

5s 4800 25-35

the specs are the same as the PQ packs (coinsidence?) in terms of weight and dimensions as the 5K packs!
only question is will either of these packs fit? the a123 were approx 55mm tall and they had no chance of fitting

i would use one of mikes trays.

as far as weight goes the 5s will be substatially heavier but will give me more runtime and wattage...

also, i need to last 20 mins. will the 4s even do that?

anyway i have 2 voltage options, and a few gearing options (gear up with 4s or gear down on 5s)

i need to know which would be best. its a large track:

anyway,
please help.

i cant afford to buy 2 packs at this stage... im just worried that the 4s will be too slow, and not last long enough!

thanks guys.

Ryan

your motor has a kv of 2600 thats a hot motor I wouldnt go more than 4s in a racing enviorment...but if you feel that when you are running you are at WOT and you NEED more speed to compete than go to a 5s, but going to 5s and not dropping your Motor kv wont improve your runtime...you have to do both as a package

If you gear to the same speed the 5S pack will last longer. It has 25% more Watt/hours in it than the 4S. You might not get 25% more run time because the motor might be less efficient at a higher rpm.

Hay Ryan,
I would go with the 4s, I have both the 5&4 and I just use my 4s way more than a 5s. 5s is only really good in pure open bashing, 4s is track fast and friendly. I get about 20+ minutes our of 4s in my buggy, and get more than 15 minutes in my Truggy on 5000mAH.

Nothing!.. Hahahahaaa..

thanks guys :)

TDC57, you could have recommended anything and i would have listened

ok, now, which pack/s should i get?

i know you wont have the zippys as you can afford the best, but me, im 17 and without a job so money is hard. cant screw it up!

will the 4800 pack fit under the shell? how thick are mikes battery trays? (im going with 3mm / 1/8 of an inch as a guess)

also, how do you actually mount these trays once you have them? are they attached from the bottom or from the top? i have no idea, and would like to think about it before paying for it! :D

thanks to everyone who commented, but id still love to see the 5s perform, perhaps if the 4s still isnt enough i will buy a 2s pack and rewire into 1s2p or something...

The tray I got from mike included a spacer the size of the tray. I screwed the spacer to the chassis, and the tray to the spacer. The spacer's height along with the Battery tray's height comes out to be about 10mm, with the spacer taking up most of that (about 6mm). You may be ble to think of another way to mount the tray, but the spacer helps to clear the mud guards/folds on the side of the chassis.
Hope this helps.

yes, that helps alot, coudl you possibly post a pic or 2 showing the tray unmounted and the spacer mounted? (i assume you cut out things like holes for the side guard screw bits etc.

10mm is alot, so being conservative 15mm with strap>?

just paid for the zippy lipo - with a coupon it was pretty cheap :) ($5 off)
thanks,
ryan

ALSO.
"New 1 piece designs allow 1.25" clearance to mud guard and has no spacer - this design fits most vehicles and lowers battery in the vehicle by .15" vs. the "spacer" installation. Please verify 1.25" clearance from center spur gear to mud guard prior to ordering."

what exactly does this mean?
does it mean this, or something else? the 1.25 is very close, about 1mm less than the thinnest area which is ok, but needs verification!
this should help lower the battery and make it easier to fit :)

thank-you and goodnight!

Well Ryan,
unfortunately I don’t know about your particular build but for my 808 here is what I have and what I work with.. (Hope this helps?)

I have a total of 44mm from the top of my chassis to the bottom of the body. I use a PQ 4s 5000mAH 25C and it's good for 20+minutes and the dimensions are 166 x 48.5 x 35.5 mm, when I add the RCM battery try and the Strap thickness (cant forget the details) I end up with 42-43mm total height / IE NO SHIMMING!!

Hope that helps (???) best of luck and for what it’s worth I did order up a 4s Zippy last week, I don’t expect it to be 30-35 C (lets get real) but for under $100 what the hell it got to be worth it..

Please let us know what your thoughts are on what you decide to go with..

Have a great one Ryan..

Shaun.

i tuck 5s under my 777 CP body on the 8xb, and my battery tray is the older one but is sitting as low as possible while keeping the mudguards. my flightpower 5s 5000 is 45mm x 46mm and it sits under there with only raising the FRONT body mount 3/16".

im getting 27-30 mins runtime on the track running at full race pace. but im also using a 1515 2.5d motor and im geared or 42mph. temps are great on 5s, but you should have trouble fitting ANY 4s pack at 5000mah or less. as most are only 36mm tall which fits easily under the body without rasing it.

but yea i would think you could get 20 mins out of a 4s on that track. that might be about all you get but 20mins should be realistic.

btw that track looks killer got anymore pics or does it have a site?

The Hyper 8's body sits quite low, even the Proline Crowd Pleazer 2 sits just as low as the stock body. My 4s 4800mah pack is about 43mm tall, and just barely cleared the body with a velcro strap over the top of the battery. Granted I was using my own custom mount, but I'm sure it sat nearly at the same height as Mike's mount.

MM i was waiting for your response thanks :)
i guess there is only one way to find out... any ideas on how much shipping via regular mail international would be for the tray?
thanks guys

btw, the track is called Brisbane dirt racing.
rctech has a HUGE forum with some pics but its almost 200 pages long (read them last year LOL)

the track layout changed as of yesterday, 4 bobcats and 50 people have recreated it, i will post another pic when one is uploaded :)

how do i raise the body while still using the clips? (small plastic washers wouldnt work?

thanks again

Dude, I've got a 2 piece RCM battery tray just sitting here that I was going to return to Mike for a refund as I can't use it (I'm in Brisbane). I'll pm you the details.

Mikes newer single piece battery box keep the battery lower than the older 2 piece style with the spacer.

Look at it in the RCM store. It tells you how much lower it is I believe. The new single piece designe is better. Keeps the COG lower give you more battery head room and has less weight than the old 2 piece version.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Yea, that's true but I figured if hes on a budget then this is cheaper than getting one from RCM and paying the postage to Australia.
