Thats the combo i have - I run a 5S Lipo and an astroflight 109 - No Problems as of yet - the 3S kokam, like serum stated, is about 130 and the astroflight cost me about 110 if i remember correctly. Very easy to use charger as well...
How does the power/performance of the Kokam 11.1v 3 cell lipos compare to GP 14 cell 16.8v nickel-metals? Does the weight savings really make up the difference?
What about a pair of 7.4v's in place of paired stick packs, ie. e-maxx or novak hv-maxx? They are only $48 for 2100 mah each. More expensive than 2400 sticks, but lighter. Would the price be worth it if I had the charger covered?
Those lipoly cells are a league on their own! (in weight and performance) The thing with the HVmax is that it does not puls a lot of amps, and you will be doing fine with those 2100's (i presume you are talking about the maxamps 20C lipo?)
If you are looking for a some 'hotter' setup the Kokam 3200's are a better choice though.
Glad to be here! Seems I have alot of research (and question asking!) to do. It's so much easier when there's the experience of so many people to look through, even if the amount I've decided to bite off seems a little intimidating at first. I kind of want to understand as much as possible first, not just copy someone's setup.
The new FMA Direct Scorpion charger and batteries looked interesting at first, with the auto low voltage cut-off ( did'nt even know that was necesssary ) and the set and forget charger, but then I looked at the prices:
Not that it's a huge difference in price, but both Tower Hobbies and Horizon Hobby have the pieces listed at lower prices than FMA Direct. It's still a hefty price, but if you are just getting ready to go lipo it's a great place to start, at least on paper.
I expect to have my scorpion setup in just about a month. I'll report back once I have some information. The write-up in RCDriver is very favorable.
