Do I split esc and bec w/ a Y connector? (I am using ch 3 for mech. brakes) - 04.21.2008, 04:36 PM

Just checking as far as the wiring to the RX goes for the bec. As stated above I am using mech. brakes on ch. 3 (mm esc) So I would assume that I need to split the signal between the esc and bec on the other channel

I'm not following. What you do depends on the radio.

At the simplest, use a Y connector off Ch2 (throttle) from the receiver. One side of the Y goes to ESC, the other goes to the brake.

If your radio has channel mixing, put your ESC to CH2 and the brake servo to CH3. No Y connector needed. Then, set the radio for channel mixing (which is basically saying that CH3 will be slaved off whatever CH2 is doing). The advantage to this method is that you have more adjustment options via the radio (EPA, trims, exponentials, etc) for each channel without having to fiddle with the mechanicals.

Either way works though...

I have a FUTABA ..what i am concerned about is the cc bec. I intend to put the brake servo on ch. 3 ( the mech brakes are en experiment to see if i can mix some front brakes w/ a small amount via the esc./ motor brakes)

If I put the brakes on ch 3, esc on ch 2, steering on ch. 1...do I split the esc w/ the bec is my question...or do I split esc and mech brakes on ch. 2 with cc bec on ch. 3?

It there is a forth slot in your receiver for battery plug the bec into that. The bec doesn't need a signal so really it can be plugged into anywhere but the best place would be the battery port on the receiver.

The BEC plug in BATT chanel
The sterring in chanel 1
he ESC in chanel 2
The mechanical brake in chanel 3

And follow what BrianG said. That's exactly how i run my MBX5T

And don't forget to remove the red wire on the ESC harness plug before to plug it on the reciever.

Doesn't it have to be in line with the ESC wires so it can change the voltage down before it gets to the RX?

The BEC gets power from your batteries, and steps it down to 6v (or whatever you set it at) and then feeds it into the rx the same as a little nimh rx pack would. you have your BEC and ESC inputs paralleled across your battery. That way, the esc and the BEC get power from the battery. the BEC gives this power to the rx, then esc gives power to the motor.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, just one more thing. Does disconnecting the red wire from the esc stop power coming from the esc to the rx?

Precisely. The outside (usually black/brown) is a ground. The middle wire is the +ve voltage from the esc's built-in BEC output, and the outside wire is the signal. You always need ground for the signal to make sense, but once you have a separate bec you dont need the red one :)
