Spur gear size question - 06.04.2008, 08:51 AM

Can anyone tell me if the size of the spur gear really matters?

Aside from varied gearing options, is their any really noticeable effect of using a 44T versus a 48T in a 1/8 buggy?

I was reading the specs of the new Hyper 9 and it says:
The buggy accelerates and has greater top end speed because of the 11/43 gear combination at the front/rear gear boxes and the 13/40 combination at the center differential. The faster spinning center differential also reduces the torque effect of the engine.

I know the new xray 808 went in this same gearing direction too.

Smaller spur enables lower COG and would hold less momentum and hence be easier / quicker to spool up - thats all I can think of

I guess the question I am really asking is that if I am running 15/48 (3.2) right now will I see any benefit of going to 14/44 (3.14)?

You will go a touch slower with perhaps a touch faster accel but none really that I can see...

Spur won't dip in to the chassis so less change of kicking up a rock... if thats an issue for you
