VXl esc + dewalt 775? -
06.07.2009, 08:20 PM
would a traxxas VXL esc be able to handle a 775 drill motor and a spc 2s lipo?
in a t-maxx with an E-maxx(old) tranny locked in 2nd. diffs and drive line are taken care of. what is a good gearing range? here it is now.
thank you

I dont think the vxl esc has a brushed motor option, so it wouldnt work regardless.
You'd need an MM esc, then it would run the big drill motor just fine- gear something like 18/72 for ~30mph top speed. You will need a new motor mount though from Kershaw Designs as the dewalt is alot fatter, and you would also need 5mm bore pinions probably.
Interesting use of a shin guard...

my vxl has been acting kinda funny. it cogs more now no matter what battery or motor i use. the LVC kicks in immediately, but i just run in ni-xx mode and use a seperate LVC. also, it would only go into reverse occasionally when i wanted to and now it won't at all. also, it won't let the motor rev to full RPM. since the warranty is up, i'll go open it up and take a picture.
edit: i got the picture (i just realized this is the first picture i have posted on this forum)
sorry for the crappy picture. it was taken with my phone with poor lighting.
there are brownish-black spots on 2 of the 3 caps. this is the only esc i have ever seen that has caps that are in a space like that. it would be very hard to replace caps like that.
They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

i wouldn't bother really.
the VXL is probably the single worst ESC ever conceived.
the only good thing i found with mine was the case.
but it cogged, the LVC never worked properly and the caps fell off.
BUT to answer you question...you caps might be dead OR have simply fallen off the board because what you said is exactly what mine did till i repaired it then brought a mamba.
try fix it, if no luck you MIGHT be able to return to traxxas to get a warrenty for a fee like i did.
then when you get the new one back, sell it to a noob on the traxxas forum and buy a mamba max. ....like i did
E-revo 3.3 conversion, 249kv outrunner, 6s, MMM
the porthole from the noob world an here has been opened!! that's how i got in.

they have let me send it in twice already without a fee and they even payed the return shipping. this time though, they want $45.
maybe i'll just get it fixed and sell it on e-bay. there's still some suckers out there who haven't tried this POS esc.
edit: i just thought of a somewhat simple solution. i can just solder some external caps onto the battery leads. i could cut some of the insulation off at the base of the wire and solder on the caps. then, i'll unsolder the deans plug and slip some shrink wrap over the exposed part of the wire to prevent shorting it out. hopefully, that'll solve my cogging and unstable running issues. i might even get reverse back. i doubt it will help the LVC though. i'll continue this in the brushless section.

there are now 2 470uf caps on the battery lead. it helped with the cogging, but the esc won't give full speed and it feels like there is punch control because it won't wheely, even with 3s.

Is the brown stuff on the caps leaking from the slits on the top,(can't really tell.) If it is and usually a cap electrolytic will pooch out at the top or start to seperate from the bottom, or just leak.
Adding the caps to the input isn't going to help if that is the case you will need to replace the 3 mounted to the board, Shouldn't really be that hard. Each cap is in parallel with each phase not the input. The Mamba Max is setup just like that. I'll give you $10 for it.
Jeff

there are a few problems with replacing the caps. i don't know a safe way of removing the old caps, and the new caps need to be a specific size. otherwise, the two halfs of the esc won't mesh together right. i'd be willing to pay $15-20 for someone to repair it for me.

Send me a PM, the parts and inbound shipping is going to be around $12-$20, unless it's something I already have in our stock, or around the corner. I'd like to see one of those VXL's
Jeff
Edit: And I wouldn't run it until it's fixed.

The ESC should be fine, they list no motor limit for either a 540 or 550 motor. The higher voltage the motor is rated for the easier it is on the ESC. Basically the higher drill motor you have the higher turns it is and the lower the Kv.
