hungry truggy - 11.01.2009, 12:55 AM

any ideas on how to stop my rcm pinions from getting eaten? motor and mount are solid(not loose) they pinion is meshed up nicely against the spur.i ran my 14t for 4 battery cycles and no problems.then today it got eaten along with a 15t pinion of mine on loan to another brushless truggy(this one completly stripped all the teeth)

I would start with checking the motor mount and making sure it isn't bent. Even a slight bend in the mount will cause short life of pinions. I've managed to bend 2 motor mounts from Mike. My terrible driving skills didn't help, but they were not hard to get flat again.

If you're eating up pinions then something isn't right between the gears. I usually run 15 or 16T on my truggy and a 17T on my buggy, both have metal spur gears. Only time I've damage a pinion was with a bent motor mount or my gear mesh was off.

+1 on the above advice....also, try to turn the spur all the way so that you can see the pinion teeth work its way over all of the spur gears teeth...i had one part of my spur gear in my old 8ight that wasn't as worn as the other sides so my gear mesh was fine until it hit the un-worn spot.....and from the looks of your pinion, it really might be a slight bend in the mount or chassis that flexes a bit too much when you land from a jump or hit the throttle...just my 2cents.. :)

Yep... Just lost my 14 tooth last week... the motor had a very slight movement with the mount and I was using a metal spur... The guys above are correct,
there must be some misalignment for that kind of damage to happen to the pinion.

Is Impact from a jump, allowing the weight of the motor to flex the mount?

This would cause some misalignment also.

This is what happened when I bent mine. I nosed into the ground and the momentum from the motor bent the mount. To fix mine I clamped the mount in a wood vise. You'll need to be careful and need to have a good idea of where the bend line is. Clamp along the bend line with the motor side in the vise and the bearing/diff side out where you can tap on it. I used the side of a pair of Klein line-man pliers to tap the mount back into shape. Didn't use much force, about as much as I'd knock on a door with. Take the mount out of the vise and place on a flat surface to judge how flat it is. I used the flat surface on the back side of a metal vise.

Before I started I thought my method would be too crude to work. But the mount wasn't doing me any good bent and it would beat buying another one if it worked.

What does your spur look like? Im not necessarily looking at the missing tooth but the wear in the center of the gear, ill go out on limb and say that your pinnions are a softer steel then your spur.

I would give Robinson Racing a try, I have so far never been let down by there hardened steel.

this is my experience with pinions that were softer then the spurs.

It almost looks like a rock got between the gears. It broke the first tooth off then bent the mount. Mount is probably bent because the gnarled teeth on the pinion are at an angle. Just a wild guess..

the spur looks fine.i was under the impression the rcmonster pinions were super strong.goes to show how much power these brushless systems are punching out. i havent had any major crashes so far.just been flyin around open sports fields and a cautious day racing.by cautious i mean 1/4 throttle and barely hanging on

i dont know what your truck is using for a spur but i run the kyosho 44 or 46 tooth nylon spurs http://www.rc-monster.com/gears.php?pg=3 and if for some reason something happens the spur would give before the pinion would. so in the long run it would be a better choice based on price. my truck came with a 53 tooth spur and i run the 46 tooth and gear it to the speed i want to get.

Id give the robinson racing one a shot, I have never been disappointing by there gears. As you can see my spur in my pic is also in perfect condition yet it tore up the 2 speed bell..

When filed I found out the bell was a softer steel then the spur.

Reading your description you use the words "against the spur". The two metal gears should mesh loosely to avoid any unneeded friction. Are you runninig your mesh too tight?
