Power supply - 11.14.2011, 01:23 PM

Hello!

I bought a Hyperion 720i dual charger from Mike a while ago, and I have no idea what power supply shall I buy for it.

For now, I only want to charge x2 3s packs. The chance is big that I'll be charging x2 6s in the near future.

The only rc devoted company that makes super power supplies is ProTek RC, AFAIK. They've got one that makes 1000w, and one that makes 2000w. Both are pricey.

I'm leaning to the ProTek Super Pro 1000, but I'm not sure if it'll handle the load the 720i will put on it when charging x2 6s packs at 10- 20A.

Anyone has any advice here?

or buy a deep cycle battery and a cheap 12v battery charger to maintain it. Then you could also charge even when power is non existent

Very nice...but, I'm quite the snail when it comes to understanding the conversion of electric stuff.

BTW, just today I came to know that MaxAmps sells a very powerful( 47A, 1150watts) power supply for a reasonable $150+. Has any of you tried their PS?

Yeah, they have two models, a 12v and a 24v. Both versions just use the same HP power supply modded as found here. The 12v version is basic enough, but I'm not sure if they modded the 24v version properly (decoupling the output ground from the case/earth ground). Either way, it's a fairly cheap high power solution if you don't want to mod your own, but you'll be paying around $100 more for that convenience (those supplies can be had for around $25).

True, that makes it worth the extra cost then. I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder!

Lol!

I'll do more research. I don't think I have enough guts to modify a basic PSU just yet.

Thanks a lot Arct1k, Brian and the others. Good feedback with some spice..:)

It's easy - you don't have to open up the server supply - just add a jumper and some leads on the outside.

Captain, if you were in the US, I'd suggest to send the supply to me and I'd mod it for you (the 12v version). I'd even boost the output to ~13v and add banana posts and you'd still save well over $50. But after shipping, you'd probably come out the same as just getting it from Maxamps.

Like brian015 said, you don't need to open it up. Adding a jumper to the external pins works fine.

Just found this lot of 19 575w HP power supplies. Cost+shipping is ~$200. Figures out to under $11 each. Not bad if someone wants to buy a bunch and re-sell them, or do a group-buy...
