Is this metal on metal or no?

If it is, noise is pretty much unavoidable. I can hear my CRT .5's spur/pinion mesh no matter how far it is away...

However, if its a plastic spur, you should be able to end up with a pretty quiet mesh. I adjust mine my sight and feel. I just put it in until its "bottomed out" and back it off very slightly. I spin the spur and the second it reaches a bind point, I'll back it off a little more until that frees up, and continue spinning it until all bind points are gone. This takes somewhat of a bit of time, but I find it results in the closest mesh without binding. The mesh is usually very quiet, and the MM ESC's "beep" from throttle is much louder.
