Revenge of the humble RC10 - 07.20.2006, 07:11 PM

I got this all original RC10 gold tub a few months ago and so far, I've only driven it once to see what work it needed to be done.

After the 10 minutes of driving, I could tell it needed work in a couple areas. First off, the drive train is extremely inefficient. The bushings and belt-drive tranny with the strange ball-clutch integrated with the 32 pitch spur may have been great back in the day, but then again nicd's and AM radio's were cutting edge technology. Another thing that I noticed was the enormous amount of slop the steering has. It has a good 1/4" of play each way when you hold the servo horn and turn the wheels with your hand. One more thing that needed to be changed was the 1/4" axles to accommodate dish-style racing wheels.

Here's some pics next to my FT B4 just to get an idea of how far we've come:

I wanted to keep this as close to original as possible while still changing some things to make it perform and look better. First, 3/16" axles require different bearings than the stock units and then you need new hubs for the bearings. My solution:

HG Precision aluminum T3 hubs, T3 axles and bearings.

Next, freeing up of the drive train. Instead of converting the clunky oversized original tranny to stealth specs, I opted for a slightly used B4 stealth tranny. As you can see, it takes up much less space in addition to being smoother and lighter than the stock tranny:

Now, to make the stealth fit. I had to shave down some unused mounting points to allow it to be closer to the shock tower and to lower it, I had to drill a hole in the mounting plate:

Had to cut the motor plate a little to allow for clearance of the motor protector on the back of the car. And this is it all put together:

I have a few more things on the way for it, so here's a teaser pic for now:

This car will mainly be used for owning newbies on the track and bombing across the dunes at the local places. (Glamis, Gorman, Pismo Beach...)
