How big of a difference is it from 12 nimh to a 4s 5000mah max amps pack?
I would do lipos

But the 5k packs WONT cut it, They dont have the current the motor needs

What is you budget for lipos only? Im shure you need more then the lipos (ballancer, Charger?)

Yes they do. People run dual track powers in series in Emaxxes. I have a 7-8 pound buggy.

Squee, thanks for the advice, but I checked them out and With a discount I get from max amps, max amps is actually cheaper.

I'm actually considering A123 atm. 260 for 2 2s2s packs and a charger.

for 260 you could buy 2 dewalt packs and a charger.. 10 cells per dewalt pack....

little more work but in the end its worth it
