A 7XL on 16 volts, huh? Wouldn't that draw more than 99 Amps?
Is there any sign of thermal overload on the controller? You know, blackened components, wierd smells, etc. Does it make any sounds at all when you turn it on now, like the "motor ready" chirp? Have you tried it with a different motor?
A 7XL is ALOT of stress on 14 cells NiMH, no matter the quality of battery. The 7XL can draw enormous amounts of current (i used to have one), where it would consistently draw 130+ amp spikes. This might have something to do with it.

Check the magnet on the 7XL. I had a simular situation with a 9L and when I looked at the magent it was loose. I used some high strength epoxy to fix that problem.
alright I will have to work on that in the morning, any ideas on how to get the can off, amazingly I have never had a problem with this can popping!
I dunno I will have to check it with one of my other motors and let you know, but it hasn't ever had a problem with overheating. Sometimes it gets a lil warmer than I would like but it never gets so hott that I can't touch it for atleast 3 to 5 seconds.
