eh? theres no reason NOT to get your friend a gift like that if he is a really good friend. Could be someone else to race/bash with. why not get someone else into the Rc if they are interested?
One of my friends gave me an atv for my bday one year because I at the time was too poor to afford one so he gave me his (no hes not rich).

Anyway back to the topic I think that the Rusty Vxl would be a good choice, just put it on a 7cell and training mode til he gets used to everything. Or if you think it would be too much for him maybe a XL-5 version would be better for him to decided if this is the hobby for him.
