Do I split esc and bec w/ a Y connector? (I am using ch 3 for mech. brakes)

Precisely. The outside (usually black/brown) is a ground. The middle wire is the +ve voltage from the esc's built-in BEC output, and the outside wire is the signal. You always need ground for the signal to make sense, but once you have a separate bec you dont need the red one :)
