i was thinking about a planetary spur gear or hubs. or using idler gears between spur and clutch. a reduction at the hubs would reduce stress on the drivetrain. but 4 times the work. i cant cut gears though.

Interesting, I like planetary gearboxes. Just built a tamiya cr-01 and it has the planetart tranny, it works great. I would probably scarp the tmaxx tranny in favor of the emaxx tranny and make a mount for the mech brake. Seems like the easiest way out! But I do like your hub reduction idea...
