lol nah the fins are just there to look pretty .

Nah but seriously, same idea as adding a heatsink, except a heatsink will be much less efficient - you can improve the efficiency of a heatsink by using some heat transfer compound like what they use for cpu heatsinks and stuff, it makes a huge difference. For example my feigao with RCM heatsink, without thermal paste the heatsink stayed cool while the motor was cooking. Add a bit of paste and the whole motor and heatsink are just warm.
