I do agree that hackers are lazy but I doubt that they will do all the trouble of hacking your wireless network just to get your credit card transaction. Unless they targeted and they know you have a big credit balance. Not to mentioned that it will take a high end spec computer to actually crack the WPA.....not that im saying its impossible it can be done but it will take more than an average guy to do it, so its not worth it....

I think this is more likely caused by the sites having an unsecured session on credit transaction....and for paypal there are a lot of email spam that will force you to login to their site thinking it was paypal but its actually a hack site....

So lesson for the say, know the site that we buy from and make sure the site is what we think it is

OMG… I just received a call from the wife apparently, we just received word from Well Fargo that someone was trying to transfer founds from my checking account… @!*^% …

Good thing I closed the account yesterday!.. What a frincken pain in the ass.. I need a drink and smoke..

I like the information on the a wireless network stuff and of course BrianG.. , I have a system that kind of feeds the neighbors / my coldasack not anymore..

i actually use the free creditreport.com, it aint free either its 13-14 dollars a month and it will tell me everytime someone checks my credit or if anything changes, i have been using it for about a year now i about 2 months ago some bank from indiana ran a credit check on me and i got an email 2hours after they did it so i called the bank and asked why they checked my credit, and someone had tried to use my info to get a loan..... id say its worth looking into, they also have the LIFE lock which is what my father uses and its pretty sweet.

First, I am sorry for what happened to you. Internet theft is a cronic problem that will be hard to ever slow down. I purchase from vendors who will take money orders as well as ccards and ONLY use money orders...I am limited as to whom I do business with, but, the less I have my info out there, the better. I won't even pay bills on line.

I have only 1 ccard so it is easy to keep track of. If something like what happened to you happened to me...I would lose my house!

Grabbing your info from your wireless network is extremely unlikely. What are the odds someone's sitting outside your place, recording your traffic, at the exact time you placed an order on a website not using SSL (https)?

Better odds are that someone you purchased from was broken into - either their website was compromised, or they were just plain dumb (through records in the trash, etc)... or that even your bank, or a bank who's ATM you used was compromised. (A local bank to my area was recently compromised, lots of people who used their ATMs now have some interesting credit issues).

Basically, anyone trying to do this kind of thing isn't looking to get one guy's info to the point they'll sit in a car & crack wep/wpa keys. The go for targets that net them hundreds or more accounts at a time. And those are the ones that are more difficult to protect yourself from.

Things you can do:

Always use sites with good, current & valid SSL certs (look for the lock icon, actually look at the cert & make sure it matches who you think you're buying from).
Use a up to date, fairly secure web browser:
Use Firefox.
Use the NoScript Addon.
Use the Adblock & Filterset.G addons.

Use good anti-virus (I use avast, it's free)
Use a good anti-spyware program (I use spybot search & destroy)
Get an account at FreeCreditReport.com or a similar site (several options, but they have pirates in their ads, so they're cooler)

If someone was getting loans in your name, they had more then a credit card #.

the deal with mine is there info didnt match the credit check and the bank called the cops on them, this happens alot to alot of people, i dont mind paying 50 cents a day to know that nobody can screw me over with my credit or steal my identity. the freecredit report does alot more than just monitor your cedit score and who is looking at, it even shows your outstanding loans, payments.

Things like freecreditreport.com are okay, but don't do much other than send alerts. I used them for a while but they still miss a lot. You are better getting with one of the insurance/protection groups. These guys do a lot more than monitor, they insure you against loss and clean up the public information about you that is most easily accessed. One major bonus is that this stops most of the unsolicited credit offers you get via mail or phone.

This sucks man I feel your pain.

Bank of America caught some trash trying to buy some plane tickets with my account one time a while back.

They thought someone jacked my CC info in a store like someone else mentioned above.

I fall under this as well.
I've had my bank account info stolen and the someones made over-sea's withdraws out of my account (they had my debit/credit card) until it was way over drawn. Only took me about 6 hours from the time it started to the time I nearly shat myself in the bank office when I went and found out what happened. Good bank though. Froze my account, flagged my credit as stolen identity, and I was fully reimbursed for all my loses. Took several weeks to get things turned around.

A guy I work with has a company credit card because he travels all the time and it's what he uses to buy his airline tickets. That number got stolen and the perp decided to buy some things at walmart =/
