Lots more info would be helpful.

What's the vehicle, does it have a tranny or CD, what motor.

But yes check the motor, the shaft will have a tick back and forth but should not have a 'clunk', and check for resistance spinning the motor shaft while pushing and pulling on it. Where is linc to take that out of context....

And check side to side play on the shaft, again should be VERY little shuck, or none.
