The strobe slipper is the thing most maxx's use for BL power. But you still have to keep it fairly tight.

To reverse direction of the motor, you just swap two motor wires. Don't know if it's the same for the Novak, but I don't see why not. It's possible the ESC had more "forward" FETs than reverse so those were stressed more. It could simply be the sensorless gods forcing you to buy a sensorless system. :)
