Hobbywing 150a esc on 8s - 11.25.2011, 09:23 PM

Hi All, I'm waiting on my new hsp/redcat 1/5 scale brushless buggy to arive soon and was wondering if anyone has ever tryed to put a 150a hobbywing esc on 8s instead of the 6s max.
The buggy has a 980kv motor and the hobbywing 150a esc, I will get a caslte xl 8s esc soon but i was thinking of trying it.
I have put a 2 to 3s esc on 4s before with a 5s external bec and worked fine for ages with no problems.
I allready have 2 castle 1/8 monster systems but im not going to try that on them so im thinking of useing it as a ginny pig.

The main MOSFETs on that controller are OnSemi NTMFS4833 -- only rated to 30V maximum breakdown voltage.

So, I'd suggest NOT to try it. (8S = 33.6V)

Oh ok, thanks for the info guys, maybe if i only charge the lipo's so they dont reach above 30v peak.

Really? Maybe you should tell that to my HW ESC's. I have four Xerun 150A units that have been to hell and back. Only one had a fan die on it and it was two years old. Fan got clogged up with mud so only my self to blame there. I think they are the most robust ESCs in my collection easily. Short of ridiculously over gearing I think they are extremely hard to kill.

I love my Castle Monster Mambas as well, don't get me wrong, but I had couple that the BEC pack it in. Both on switching ON. Never had one actually go up in flames so can't whinge too much there. (Yet)

Wont work. They have input over voltage protection. Anything over fully charged 6S pack and it will start to beep. Two quick beeps with one second pause in between. That is the case with the XERUN series of 1/8th ESCs but I am pretty sure it's the same with the EZRUN ones as well. Not sure which one you have although I wouldn't try with neither. If they could take it then everyone would be doing it.

Your best bet would be to fork out the money and get your self the Monster Mamba XL. You will have more current handling capability as well. Yes it's more money but no point doing things half assed. I run one of the first versions and it is still going strong.

Is the voltage protection for the bec or the other parts also as I will be putting a 10s bec on it if I try it, as I got another esc to work at a higher voltage buy doing it this way.
I will use it on 6s first to see how it goes but I just don't want to buy anymore lipo's as I have to many already

Not sure on which part of the ESC is the voltage protection actually protecting. You can try it with a BEC but I don't think you will get far. Even if you manage to make it work I doubt it will last all that long if at all.

Maybe you should do some lipo surgery and remove couple of cells to make them into a 6S pack since you already have so many of them. Other than that your choices are limited IMO.

You could also get your self a HV plane/heli esc and a Pistix controller. That will work in your Redcat easily but you will have to say goodbye to reverse and figure out how to run mechanical brakes.

Also partially charging the pack to total voltage just under 30V will not work neither with the HW ESC. As soon as you hit the brakes that voltage will spike well above 30V and cook your ESC for sure. I really wouldn't attempt it.

MMMM, starting to get abit worried about it catching fire now and dont want to burn a brand new buggy, i did think about a heli esc but sound like way less time, trouble and money just to buy a castle esc or now ther's a esc called a fightercat car esc. but not sure on both as they are still getting things sorted.

M'kay, so you've purchased an XBE which will arrive shortly. The hobbywing esc in mine works fine on 6S, pushing a CC 1520. I'm using a BEC for 6v to the steering servo as well, which helps the esc to some degree.

But the main point is what you're aiming for. More run time at higher voltage with less power loss due to heat? Consider the stock motor and esc one system then.

Replace this with an esc capable of higher voltage (ala CC XL2) and comparable motor with better efficiency rather than running the risk of blowing the stock esc just for kicks.

Even running the stock motor on 8S will probably chance ruining it or causing lots of heat and defeating your purpose. You could sell both the stock motor and esc to reduce your price point towards a more efficient motor.

XL2 esc with a Leopard 5692 1030kv should keep you plenty happy. Hope your batteries are up to par as well..

Buggy arived today, i will try it on a good set of 6s lipo's but if its not quick enough i might just sell the esc and motor and get a leopard 5692 980kv or 700kv and cc xl esc.
Changed my mined on trying the mod now.
