Brushless Revo or brushless CRT .5 help is appreciated - 05.31.2007, 09:16 PM

Hello all, long time no see. I got into rc crawling and have been doing that for a while. Im looking to get something quick to play around with but dont feel like going nitro. I just sold my 8ight and am in the process of selling one of my crawlers to fund a new brushless project. Im debating between a revo or crt .5

For the CRT .5 i will use:

RC Monster motor mount
Mamba 5700 or 4600 motor(already have)
Mamba Max esc
7.4v Max Amps 6000 Lipo(or similar)

So im pretty much set on that. My main question and point of this thread is what the heck should I use for the Revo?

Im planning on the RC Monster 3 piece motor mount and carbon fiber chassis. But what esc/motor would be good for this. Im planning on running a Max Amps 6000HV 11.1v lipo battery.

http://www.maxamps.com/proddetail.ph...11-Pack&cat=13

Would this voltage be ok? I just want a setup that isnt going to be too stressed and that will run well. Its mainly going to be a basher with possibly a race here or there.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Also which pinions do I need? I plan on using a Duratrax ICE to charge the lipos.

If I go the Revo route I want to make sure I know what I will need before I drop such a large sum of money on it.

Thanks,
James

Well, I think you would need a bigger battery like a 4s pack. But since you would run the Gorillamaxx chassis, you can buy two 2s 6000 packs and run them in series.

A very common set up for conversions, which is cheap as well, is a Mamba Max esc, 8xl or 9xl motor, and a UBEC. That charger should do fine as well. However, many people recommend a balancer.

Yeah I would get a balancer for which ever lipo I use. I actually dont plan on going the gorillamax route and plan to use the rc monster motor mount with the stock chassis(or the vantage cf chassis).

Im thinking more along the lines of a NEU motor and high end esc. Im only planning on using the Mamba Max if I convert the CRT .5 :)

With 4S would that be 14.4v and whatever mah the pack has? So your saying im better off with the higher voltage in the revo?

buy him saying the three piece motor mount and cf chassis i believe he meant he was going to use the vantage chassis and the nitro to Brushless motor mount i believe. this would mean that he would probably want to go with just one pack one one side of the revo so like one 4s pack, or he could make a battery holder on each side to accommodate 2p2s lipos.

Yes when you jump up the size votlage goes up to. 11.1volts would be plenty for a 1/10 scale stadium but for a monster most people here would run at lest 14.4 volts or more. A good high end esc for your purposes would definatly be the quark 125b. SOme have heating issues with this esc but this can be fixed fairly easy. And once this problem is adressed you will love the esc and it would be very smooth and reliable and definatly one of the best on the market for monster trucks.

It takes a certain amount of electrical power to move any vehicle to a desired speed in a certain amount of time. Given that power=current*voltage, you can get that power with high V/low C or low V/high C. However, you get better efficiency with a higher voltage and lower current setup. And the batteries are stressed less as well since they aren't being run close to their max discharge value.

That said, you should go with the highest voltage that your ESC and motor will work with for best results.

Im starting to lean towards the CRT .5 for right now because I can pull it off a bit cheaper. I WILL do a revo but for right now I think the CRT .5 is the way to go...plus its so cute :)

Here is the list of what im planning on(please let me know if im on the right track)

RC Monster CRT.5 Electric motor mount adapter
Castle Creations Mamba Max ESC
Mamba 5700 or 4600
Hitec HS-5245 Mighty Mini
MaxAmps Lipoly 6000mah 2S2P 7.4V Pack

Only questions I have are:

Which pinions to use with the Mamba motor and stock spur?
When is the conversion w/ the plastic spur coming out and would I use the same pinion for either stock spur or plastic?
Is 7.4v enough or should I just go with the 11.1v which obviously would be faster and put less strain on the system?

Thanks guys for the fast responses :)

I have a CRT.5 as well and absolutely LOVE the way it drives! However, since the selection of hardened pinions to use is limited at the moment, I was stuck using a hardened 16T pinion and that was geared too high. So, it's on a shelf right now also awaiting a plastic spur.

A 12 or 13T pinion should work well on either of those motors, assuming the stock Mod1 pitch.

If using the 4600, I would use 3s if it's available. If using the 5700, 2s should be fine.

Being so small, the CRT.5 is an easier conversion and can use less expensive components.

Thats kinda why I want to build this one first.

As for the Mod1 pinions, which bore do I need for the Mamba motors? 1/8th, 4mm, or 5mm?

Thanks :027:

1/8" (3.17mm) bore. That may be hard to find in a hardened Mod1 pinion, but Mike should be able to hook you up with an adaptor sleeve.

I wouldn't go with the hitec 5245 servo though. If using the mini servo I would get the jr9411. You could also remove the servo tray and fit a full size servo. I had the hitec in mine and wouldn't recommend it.

Although, if you use a full size servo, you will probably need to cut the mounting ears off so it won't interfere with the motor/diff. Then, just use servo tape to mount it.

yah james, its tom. I raced a losi mf2 during the indoor season. I usually pitted right behind kyle. I also have been playing with a losi 8t brushless lately. Just waiting on my quark to get here now because I had to send in my mamba.
