Brushless questions :) - 05.30.2007, 05:57 PM

Hey guys,
I think i'm at the stage where i'm ready to buy my setup for the Savage but just wanted to see what you guys thought. This will be the setup:

Kershaw conversion kit
Mamba Maxx ESC with UBEC
Feigao 8L
12 cell Intelect 4200 SHV

I'm a little unsure about pinions, I have ordered the 47t and 49t plastic spurs, what pinions would you reccomend?

Thanks in advance
Simon

Not sure about the pinion, but I think the 8L motor would run really hot in a Savage. I would recommend an 8xl, or since you are only running 12 cells a 7xl would also work.

Another option for the motor mount/battery mount, would be for Mike (site owner) to make you one. I can assure you that the quality will be unmatched.

Thanks for the info, I was told the XL's wouldn't run real well on 12 cell nimh? Not enough voltage? I just can't stretch the budget to lipo at the moment unfortunately as I already have nimhs aplenty. Does Mike have the savage mount in the shop or is it a one off deal?

Thanks again
Simon

I think a Feigao 8L don't will be a good choice for a savage.
It will be work very very Hot and so will be Mamba Max and Intellect Battery also.
Moreover, you'll get cogging that is very dangerous for ESC (a friend of mine fried a Mamba cause cogging) and annoying while driving.
I think best motors for a Savage should be XL series because have more torque of L series considering that the savage isn't a lightweight truck (more of 5,5 kg RTR).
I used a 9L on my savage only for little time and now I'm using it on a buggy 1/8 that weighs 3,5 kg RTR and works great!

I think you may consider at least a 10L or better a 9XL.

Lipo are however strongly advised.

So running 12 cell 4200mah nimh with MM ESC you think the 9XL would be the best choice? Should I have any over heating problems you think? I want to order pretty soon so I want to make sure I get a good combo.

Thanks
Simon

I run with the same setup with only difference I use 4s lipo cells and I think is best choice for normal voltage setup mamba / feigao.
You will need a fan on MM and I put one on 9XL too, but I don't know how 12 Nimh will work instead of lipo cells.
What discharge current allow Intellect 4200 batteries?
If they allow about 70-80 ampere of discharge, I think you can use without problems.

I'm not sure on the discharge rate, I may have to bite the bullet and get lipo but not sure if my charger will work on lipo cells that big. It's a team much more CTX andy moore, I know it will charge lipo but i think the max is 1 amp, what amperage do you charge yours at?

Lipo must usually be charged 1c.
It means that If you have lipo 4000 mah you must charge them to 4000 mah.

Thanx Serum much appreciated and very helpful, after reading a few threads I think a CRT .5 may be the project for me. At this stage I dont think I can afford 2 of everything, i.e. extra charger, 2 battery packs etc. so the CRT .5 may be a possibility, I could actually afford to run one lol.

Do you think a crt .5 would work well with a novak gtb 5.5 or 4.5 on 6 cell nimh? I already have those goodies in stock :) Just wasnt sure if the crt .5 would have enough room to mount 6 cell nimh?

You could give it a swirl, it should be capable of moving it, but these setups are not as strong as the mm setups. a 1/16th truggy is a tad smaller than a 1/10th onroad.

I was using a Novak GTB 5.5 with a 1/10 4wd buggy and that was quite fast but I imagine the CRT .5 would probably be heavier. I'm just in the position at the moment of probably not being able to afford a new charger and lipo cells as well :( An MM setup is usable with 6 cell nimh but not as good as lipo I know. What KV MM would you reccomend?
